Complete Guide to Knitting a Chic Sweater



You’ll Need:
350; 350; 400; 400; 450g of yarn (50% mohair, 50% acrylic; 157m/50g) of grey color;
350; 350; 400; 400; 450g of the same yarn, but beige color;
Contrast color yarn;
Knitting needles 6.5 and 7;
Auxiliary needle;
Stitch markers.
Size:
XS; S; M; L; XL.
Used Patterns:
- 1 x 2 rib;
- Wrong-side pattern: 1 row of purls, 1 row of knit stitches by turn;
- Fancy “arans” pattern: according to the scheme.
Stitches Control:
Wrong-side pattern with knitting needles 7 in 2 threads of yarn: 15 stitches = 10 cm;
Fancy “arans” pattern with knitting needles 7 in 2 threads of yarn: 18 stitches x 18 rows = 11 x 10 cm.
Instructions:
Back
Cast on 92; 98; 104; 110; 122 stitches with knitting needles 6.5 in 2 threads of yarn (both colors) and make 1 x 2 rib. The first and the last 2 stitches should be purls. In 8 cm height, switch to knitting needles 7 and start working with the fancy “arans” pattern. For sizes S; M; XL, decrease 1 stitch at the beginning and end of the 1st rows. You will have 92; 96; 102; 110; 120 stitches on the knitting needles.
Divide the stitches: 2; 4; 7; 2; 7 stitches – wrong-side patterns, 1st-18th rows of “arans” x 4; 4; 4; 5; 5 times, 1st-16th rows of “arans”, 2; 4; 7; 2; 7 stitches – wrong-side patterns.
At 37 cm height from rib, place a marker on the selvedge stitch. This is your mark for armholes. Continue knitting straight.
At 58; 59; 60; 61; 62 cm height from rib, bind off from both sides: 1 x 5 stitches; 1 x 5 stitches; 1 x 6 stitches; 1 x 6 stitches; 1 x 7 stitches. Then, in every 2nd row: 4 x 5 stitches; 2 x 5 stitches; 2 x 6 stitches; 4 x 6 stitches, 1 x 6 stitches and 3 x 7 stitches; 1 x 7 stitches and 3 x 8 stitches.
At 60; 61; 62; 63; 64 cm height from rib, bind off the central 14; 14; 14; 16; 16 stitches. After knitting 2 rows straight (each part separately), bind off 14 stitches for each shoulder.
Front
Make in the same way as back for the neck-hole line at 57; 58; 59; 60; 61 cm from rib. Bind off the central 12; 12; 12; 14; 14 stitches, continuing each part separately. For smooth rounding, along the inner neck-hole line bind off in every 2nd row: 1 x 6 stitches; 1 x 4 stitches; 1 x 3 stitches; 1 x 2 stitches.
Make shoulder chamfers in the same way as for back.
Sleeves
Cast on 47; 50; 53; 56; 59 stitches with knitting needles 6.5 in 2 threads of yarn (both colors) and make 1 x 2 rib. The first and the last 2 stitches should be purls. In 8 cm height, turn to knitting needles 7.
Work with the main “arans” pattern. Make increases in the 1st row: 7; 8; 7; 8; 7 stitches. Totally, you will have 54; 58; 60; 64; 66 stitches. Divide the stitches: 1; 3; 4; 6; 7 stitches – wrong-side pattern, 1st-18th rows of “arans”, 1st-16th rows of “arans”, 1; 3; 4; 6; 7 stitches of wrong-side pattern.
For side widening, make increases in the wrong-side pattern: 4 x 1 stitch in every 8th row and 3 x 1 stitch in every 10th row; 5 x 1 stitch in every 8th row and 2 x 1 stitch in every 10th row; 6 x 1 stitch in every 8th row and 1 x 1 stitch in every 10th row, 7 x 1 stitch in every 8th row; 7 x 1 stitch in every 8th row.
Totally, you will have 68; 72; 74; 78; 80 stitches.
At 40; 39.5; 38.5; 37.5; 35.5 cm from rib, bind off all the stitches.
Make the second sleeve in the same way.
Collar
Cast on 101; 101; 101; 104; 104 stitches with knitting needles 6.5 in 2 threads of yarn (both colors). Make 1 x 2 rib. The first and last 2 rows should be with purls. In 20 cm, make 1 row of knit stitches and several rows of stockinette stitch with contrast yarn on the right side.
Assembly:
Make shoulder seams. Sew sleeves between markers. Sew up sleeves and sides.
Sew collar.
