Complete Guide to Knitting with Heavy Yarn: Patterns, Instructions, and Assembly Tips

You’ll Need:

19 (20) 21 skeins of heavy yarn (50% polyarcyl, 25% wool, 25% Alpaca; 40m/50g);

Knitting needles 10;

Circle knitting needles 9 and 10.

Size:

S (M) L.

Stitches Control:

Honeycomb pattern: 10.5 sts х 13.5 rows = 10 х 10 cm;

Half-brioche pattern: 8 sts x 13.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Used Patterns:

  • Rib in straight rows (pattern repeat = 4 + 2 + 2);
  • Stockinette stitch: 1 selvedge st, *2 purls, 2 knit sts*; repeat from * to *, 2 purls, 1 selvedge st;
  • Wrong-side rows: due to the ornament.
  • Rib in circle rows (pattern repeat = 3 sts). Alternate 1 purl and 2 knit sts.
  • Honeycomb pattern (pattern repeat = 4 + 2 + 2 selvedge sts).

Work due to the scheme, on which only right-side rows are stated. Make wrong-side rows with purls. Start with 1 selvedge st, sts before pattern repeat, pattern repeat, finish with sts after pattern repeat, 1 selvedge st. Repeat 1st - 4th rows for the ornament.

Half-brioche pattern consists of odd quantity of sts. Start and finish each row with 1 selvedge st.

1st row: 1 knit st, 1 purl (alternate, finish with 1 knit st);

2nd and 4th rows: *slip 1 st with yarn over as purl, 1 knit st*; repeat from * to *, slip 1 st as purl;

3rd row: *yarn over together with knit st, 1 purl*; repeat from * to *, yarn over together with knit st.

Knit 1st - 4th rows once, then, repeat 3rd - 4th rows.

Instructions:

Back:

Cast on 56-60-64 sts and make 5 cm with rib, after that, turn to making honeycomb pattern. After 52 cm = 70 rows from rib, bind off 9-10-11 sts for shoulder chamfers from each side. At the same time, bind off the central 22 sts neck-hole. Finish each part separately. After 53.5 cm = 72 rows from rib, bind off 8-9-10 sts of shoulder from each side.

Front:

Make in the same way as back, but make deeper neck-hole. For this, bind off the central 10 sts in 46 cm = 62 rows from rib and then, 2 x 2 and 2 x 1 st in every 2nd row.

Sleeves:

Cast on 19-23-27 sts and work with half-brioche pattern. After knitting 22 cm = 30 rows, increase the sts in the new right-side row: 1 selvedge st, 3-5-7 sts of half-brioche pattern, 1 purl and 1 knit st from the next st, 1 yarn over, 1 st of half-brioche pattern, 1 selvedge st = 27-31-35 sts. After 50.5 cm = 68 rows, bind off all the sts.

Assembly:

Make shoulder seams. After that, cast on 57 sts with circle knitting needles along the neck-hole line and continue knitting with circle rows with rib. At 4 cm height, make 1 cross purl from every 2nd purl st. Repeat these increases in the height of collar (8 cm) and in the rest stripes from purls = 76 sts and continue knitting sts due to the ornament (= 2 purls, 2 knit sts).

At 10 cm height, turn to knitting needles 10 and continue making 2 x 2 rib. After reaching 22 cm height, bind off the sts due to the pattern.

Sew up the sleeves, make side and sleeve seams.
