Special Stitches/Techniques:

  • DC Cluster: YO, insert hook into ST, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops on hook, [YO, insert hook into same ST, YO, pull up a loop, YO and pull through first two loops on hook] twice, with 4 loops on hook, YO and pull through all loops on hook.

  • Invisible Finish/Join: FO leaving a long tail. Thread the tail onto a tapestry needle. Place the tapestry needle through the top of the 2nd ST from front to back and pull through. Place tip of needle into top of the last ST of the round, under the back loop of the stitch, and pull through to the back of the work. Weave in the end.

Finished Size:

  • Approx. 4.25” across

Gauge:

  • Motif measures approx. 4.25” across at the end of Round 5.

NOTES:

  • CH-3 counts as the first DC of the round.
  • This project is worked in joined rounds. Do NOT turn at the end of each row.
  • Invisible joins are used to create a cleaner join at the end of specified rows. A SL ST can be used if that is your preference, but it will create a more obvious join.
  • Gauge is not vital to this project however; it may affect the size of your coaster and the amount of yarn used.
  • A stitch marker can be used to help keep track of the first stitch of each round.

Round 1: Using Colour A, CH 4, join last CH to first CH with a SL ST to form a ring. CH 1, SC 12 into the ring. Join last ST to first ST with a SL ST. (12)

Round 2: CH 3 (counts as first DC here and throughout), DC2TOG in same ST as CH 3 (counts as first DC-Cluster), CH 1, *DC-Cluster in the next ST, CH 1, repeat from * around. Fasten off with invisible join. (12 Clusters)

Round 3: Join Colour B with a SL ST in the BLO of the first DC Cluster of Round 2. CH 1, HDC in the BLO of the first ST, HDC in the BLO of each CH and ST around. Fasten off with invisible join. (24)

Round 4: Join Colour A with a SL ST in the BLO of the first HDC of Round 3. CH 3 (counts as first DC), working under both loops, DC2TOG in same ST as CH 3, CH 2, *DC-Cluster in the next ST, CH 2, repeat from * around. Fasten off with invisible join. (24 Clusters)

Round 5: Join Colour B with a SL ST in the BLO of the first DC Cluster of Round 4. CH 1, working under both loops, HDC in the same ST. TR 2 in the CH-SP, *HDC in the top of the next ST, TR 2 in CH-SP, repeat from * around. Join last ST to first ST with a SL ST. (72)

FO and weave in ends. Steam or wet block to flatten the coaster and set your stitches.
