Complete Guide to Crocheting a Stylish Hat, Cowl, and Fingerless Gloves with Beautiful Shells Ornament

Materials Needed

You'll need:

  • 250 g of pink yarn Mia (80% alpaca wool, 20% polyacryl, 125m/50g);
  • Crochet hook sizes: 2, 4, 5;
  • 3 buttons.
  • Main Ornament Techniques

    Single Crochet: Start each row with 1 extra chain stitch for increase. For all wrong side rows, insert the hook only through the front loop. For all right side rows, insert only through the back loop of the previous row.

    Shells Ornament in Straight Rows

    The quantity of stitches is multiplied by 8 + 3. Crochet according to Scheme 1. Start with the stitches before the pattern, repeat the pattern stitches, and finish with stitches after the pattern. Make once from the 1st to the 4th row, then repeat the 3rd and 4th rows.

    Shells Ornament in Circular Rows

    The quantity of stitches is multiplied by 8. Crochet the same way as shells ornament in straight rows, but according to Scheme 2. Make a circle row transition according to the scheme. Make once from the 1st to the 3rd circular rows, then repeat the 2nd and 3rd circular rows.

    Stitches Control

    For the main ornament using crochet hook size 4: 20 stitches and 15 rows = 10 x 10 cm; for the shells ornament using crochet hook size 5: 20.5 stitches and 9.5 circular rows = 10 x 10 cm.

    Hat Instructions

    Make a chain of 14 chain stitches + 1 chain stitch increase with crochet hook size 4 for the placket and crochet with the main ornament. At about 56 cm from the set-up edge, connect the ends of the stripe. For the upper part of the hat, crochet one edge of the placket with 144 slip stitches using crochet hook size 5. Circling in a ring, chain 1 slip stitch and crochet in circular rows using the shells ornament. After 12 circular rows from the beginning, continue crocheting with crochet hook size 4. In 4 circular rows after changing the hook, continue with crochet hook size 2. In the next 6 circular rows after the second change of hook, crochet with single crochets, making 1 single crochet in each arch of chain stitches = 36 stitches. In the next circular row, crochet 3 single crochets together and finish your work. Draw the working yarn through the upper part of the last circular row stitches, tighten them and fasten the yarn.

    Cowl Instructions

    Make a chain of 43 chain stitches + 1 chain stitch increase with crochet hook size 4 and crochet with the main ornament. In 9 cm from the set-up edge, switch to crochet hook size 5 with shells ornament in straight rows. At 70 cm from the beginning of the shells ornament, continue working with hook size 4 and main ornament. In 9 cm from the ornament change, make 3 holes for buttons in the wrong side row. To do this, slip 2-3 single crochets (depending on the size of your buttons), making the needed quantity of chain stitches. Then make 1 more "shrimp stitch" row (= single crochets from left to right) and finish your work. Crochet the set-up edge with 1 row of "shrimp stitch." Sew the buttons onto the cowl.

    Fingerless Gloves Instructions

    Right Glove

    Make a chain of 18 chain stitches + 1 chain stitch increase with crochet hook size 4 and crochet with the main ornament. In 20 cm from the set-up row, connect the ends. Crochet one edge with crochet hook size 5, making 40 slip stitches, circling in a ring with 1 slip stitch, and continue crocheting with shells ornament in circular rows. For the thumb opening, slip the last pattern before transferring to the circular row, making 8 chain stitches in 5 circular rows from fastening. Crochet these stitches in the next circular row with 8 double crochets and include them in the shells ornament again. After 12 circular rows from fastening, finish your work. Fasten the opening for the thumb with 16 single crochets, circle the row in a ring with 1 slip stitch and then crochet with single crochets in circular rows. For 4 circular rows, use hook size 4 and finish your work in 7 circular rows.

    Left Glove

    The left glove is made symmetrically to the right glove.
