Materials

Dk / weight 3 yarn I used Paintbox Simply DK in Slate Green for the background colour (276 metres per 100g) and various different colours for the animals.

4ply yarn in black and white for the eyes on the 4, 5 and 6.5”

3 and 4 mm crochet hooks

  • sc = single crochet (double crochet UK)
  • hdc = half double crochet (half treble crochet UK)
  • dc = double crochet (treble crochet UK)
  • tr = treble crochet (double treble crochet UK)
  • sc2tog / sc3tog = sc 2/3 stitches together (double crochet 2/3 stitches together)
  • slst = slip stitch
  • blo = back loop only (crochet into the back loop of the stitch)
  • [ ] = in the same stitch

  • ch = chain
  • Loop stitch

Gauge

9 dc x 4 rows = 2” x 2”

Eyes

If making small, medium and large use a 3mm hook and black 4 ply yarn.

If making extra large use dk black yarn and 4mm hook

Round 1: In a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Fasten off with a long end for sewing, sew one white line for small, medium and large and two white lines for extra large.

Owl

Small 4” / Medium 5” Square

Eyes

Using white make two.

Make a magic circle, ch2, 9 hdc into the circle, slst to the first and pull tight. (9) Fasten off and sew black centres.

Wings

Make two using brown.

Ch5, sc in the second chain from the hook, [2 hdc] in the next 2, sc in the last, ch2, slst in the second chain from hook, working along the other side, sc, [2 hdc] in the next 2, sc in the last, slst to first. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Make two using brown.

ch3, sc in the second chain from the hook, [2 hdc] in the last. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Beak

Sew a triangle in orange or yellow between the eyes. Sew some v stitches in cream for the feathers.

Large 6.5” Square

Eyes

Make two starting with black 4ply.

Round 1: Make a magic circle, ch1, 6 sc into the circle, slst to the first and pull tight. (6)

Change to white dk.

Round 2: ch1, [2 hdc] in each stitch, slst to the first. (12) Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Wings

Make two using brown.

Ch7, sc in the second chain from the hook, [2 hdc] in the next, [hdc, dc] in the next, [dc, hdc] in the next, [2 hdc] in the next, sc 1, ch2, slst in the second chain from hook, working along the other side, sc 1, [2 hdc] in the next, [hdc, dc] in the next, [dc, hdc] in the next, [2 hdc] in the next, sc 1, slst to the first. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Ears

Make two using brown.

ch4, sc in the second chain from the hook, hdc 1, [2 dc] in the last. Fasten off with a long end for sewing.

Beak

Sew a triangle in orange or yellow between the eyes. Sew some v stitches in cream for the feathers.
