What You Will Need

• Yarn: #2 fine (sport, baby, 5ply) 100% cotton or cotton blend yarn with 16 - 18 WPI wraps per inch in the following colors:
• Color A, pink (belly) - 14.2 yards (13 meters) to be worked double-stranded
• Color B, orange (beak/feet) - 8.75 yards (8 meters) to be worked double-stranded
• Color C, light green (body) - 24 yards (22 meters) to be worked double-stranded
• Color D, white (eyes) - 4.3 yards (4 meters) to be worked single-stranded
• Color E, black (eye detail) - 1 yard (1 meter) to be worked single-stranded
• Crochet hook: 4.5mm (7) for the coaster, 3.5mm (E/4) for the eyes
• Notions: Scissors, Yarn needle

Finished Size

These owl coasters measure about 4 inches (10 cm) wide - this does not include the wings and is about 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) long.

Gauge

The gauge for this pattern is the first two rounds of the pattern should measure about 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) in diameter, using two strands of yarn and a 4.5mm hook.

Pattern Instructions

Body (use two strands of yarn for body)

Round One

Round 1, color A, use double strand of yarn and 4.5mm hk - Into a magic ring, chain 3 (this counts as 1 double crochet), then make 11 double crochets into the ring, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join, pull the yarn tail tight to close the circle. [12 double crochet in this round]

Abbreviated Version: Rnd 1, col A, use double strand of yarn and 4.5mm hk - MR, ch3 (counts as dc), 11 dc into ring, sl st into top of ch-3 to join, pull yarn tail tight to close the circle. [12dc]

Round Two

Round 2, work stitches into the spaces between the stitches - Slip stitch into the next space between the stitches, ch3 (this counts as a double crochet), make 1 double crochet, and chain 1 in the same space as ch-3 (count the chain 3, double crochet and chain 1 as a 2 double crochet cluster stitch), then make (2 double crochet cluster and chain 1) in each of the next 4 spaces, change to yarn color B and make a 3 double crochet cluster and chain (for the beak) in the next space, change back to color A, make (2 double crochet cluster and chain 1) in each of the next 6 spaces, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join, chain 1, cut yarn, fasten off, and weave in ends. Foot (make 2)

Round One

Round 1, color B, the feet are worked in the 6th st counted from under each wing - Slip stitch the yarn into the 6th stitch, chain 3, make 2 double crochet into the same space, chain 3, slip stitch into the same space, chain 1, cut the yarn, fasten off, and weave in the ends. Repeat for the other foot. [2 x chain 3 and 2 double crochet in each round]

Eyes (make 2)

Round One

Round 1, color D, use a single strand of yarn, 3.5mm hook - Into a magic ring, chain 3 (this counts as 1 double crochet), make 11 double crochet into the ring, slip stitch into the top of the chain 3 to join, pull the yarn tail tight to close the ring, cut the yarn, leave a long tail for sewing, fasten off and weave in the starting yarn tail. Finish

Sew the eyes to the head using the long yarn tail. Position the eyes on either side of the beak and in round three of the body.
