Finished Size:

The crochet Penguin applique is about 2- 3/8″ (6 cm) tall.

Yarn:

  • Crochet cotton thread size 3, color – black
  • Crochet cotton thread size 3, color – white
  • Crochet cotton thread size 10, colors – orange

Hooks and other materials:

  • crochet hook 1/2.75 mm
  • crochet hook 1.5 mm
  • crochet hook 1.8 mm
  • small buttons 6 mm

Instructions:

To make this Penguin, you need to crochet a Large Heart with flippers for the body, two Small Hearts for the feet and a Tiny Heart for the beak.

Body

With white crochet cotton thread size 3 and hook size 1/2.75 mm, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the 4th Ch from hook (the first Ch made), working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St.

Rnd 2. Ch 3, HDC+DC in first St, 3 DC into next St, 2 DC into next St, DC into each of next 3 Sts, DC into Ch 1, DC+TR+DC into next St (Heart point), DC into Ch 1, DC into each of next 3 Sts, 2 DC into next St, 3 DC into next St, DC+HDC into next St, Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Cut off white color.

Rnd 3. Draw black crochet cotton thread size 3 through the center of the heart, using both strands of thread, Ch 1;

drop the beginning (short) end and continue crochet with working thread only – Ch 1, working under two loops – HDC into 2nd Ch of Ch 3 at the beginning of previous Rnd and into next Ch, HDC into top of first St, 2 HDC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into each of next 8 Sts, 3 DC into next St (Heart point),

HDC into each of next 8 Sts, 2 HDC into each of next 3 Sts, HDC into last St; working under two loops – HDC into each of next 2 Chs of Ch 3 in the end of the previous Rnd, TR into the center, Sl St into top of 2nd HDC at the beginning of this Rnd.

Rnd 4. Ch 1, SC into same St and into each of next 3 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 3 Sts, SC into each of next 3 Sts;

First Flipper – Ch 8, Sl St into 2nd Ch, SC into next Ch, HDC into next Ch, DC2tog, HDC into next St, SC into next Ch, SC into same St where flipper was started;

SC into each of next 7 Sts, 3 SC into next St (Heart point), SC into each of next 8 Sts;

Second Flipper – Ch 7, Sl St into 2nd Ch, SC into next Ch, HDC into next Ch, 2 DC into next Ch, HDC into next Ch, SC into next Ch, SC into same St where flipper was started;

SC into each of next 2 Sts, 2 SC into each of next 3 Sts, SC into each of next 6 Sts, Sl St into first St of the Rnd.

Fasten off.

Beak

Make a tiny heart for the Beak.

With orange crochet cotton thread size 10 and hook size 1.5 mm make a magic ring,

Rnd 1. Ch 2, make all of the next Sts into the ring: 3 HDC, 2 SC, Ch 1, HDC (Heart point), Ch 1, 2 SC, 3 HDC, Ch 2, Sl St.

Draw the loop tightly closed. Make sure there is no hole in the center.

Fasten off.

Foot – make 2

Make a small heart for the foot 

With orange crochet cotton thread size 10 and crochet hook size 1.8 mm, Ch 4;

Rnd 1. Make all of the next stitches into the fourth Ch from hook (the first Ch made) working under both loops – 3 DC, 3 HDC, Ch 1, DC (Heart point), Ch 1, 3 HDC, 3 DC; Ch 3, Sl St in center.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew on small buttons for the eyes. Sew on beak and feet.

This crochet Penguin has a small red heart (see instructions for the Foot) in its flipper and would be perfect for Valentine’s Day embellishment!

The first larger Penguin is made with worsted medium weight yarn and is about 3-3/4″ (9.5 cm) tall.
