How to Make Adorable Crochet Flower Appliques

Crochet flower appliques are like little bursts of joy for your projects! They add a pop of color and a touch of whimsy, making everything they adorn instantly more charming. Whether you're embellishing a hat, a bag, or a blanket, these dainty crochet creations are sure to bring a smile to your face.

Materials Required

Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/4 (Fingering, 100% cotton) or any other Fingering-weight yarn (You can use any yarn to make this flower, but it will affect the size of the applique).

Color Options

I used colors called Cream (04), Open Sea (79), Pink Berry Smoothie (54), Lemon (23), and Pistachio (108), but you can use any colorway you like.

Measurements

The head of the flower measures about 10.5 cm (4.15 in) and the overall length (with the stem) is about 18 cm (7 inches). One petal is 4.5 cm (1.7 inches) long.

Pattern Instructions

Center of the Flower

Crocheted with yellow yarn.

Start: magic ring.

Round 1: 9 sc in the magic ring, close the round with a slip stitch.

Round 2: 1 ch, 2 sc in each stitch (18), close the round with a slip stitch.

Attach white yarn. Proceed as follows:

Round 3: 1 ch, *1 sc, 3 ch* x 18, close the round with a slip stitch.

Surface Crochet Details

Get your contrasting yarn (in my case it’s green) and keep it with your fingers behind the crochet piece. Insert your hook right below the white stitch, grab the yarn, and pull up a loop. Now insert your hook in another stitch (below the next white stitch), grab the yarn, and pull it out again, creating a slip stitch. Repeat it 18 times in total to create a circle.

The tension with which you pull these loops will affect the width of the “line.” A tighter pull will create slimmer lines, while loose crocheting will leave it quite chunky.

Petals / Leaves

We need 10 of these shapes in total. We will use 8 of them as petals (with pink yarn), and 2 of them as leaves (with blue yarn).

Start: 10 ch

We’re going to work the stitches around the starting chain. It means that we will make stitches on one side (photo 1), and then work on another row of stitches from the other side (photos 2-4).

3 dc in the 4th chain stitch (counting from the hook), 3 dc in one st, 2 dc in one st, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc (in the last chain stitch).

Now make 1 or 2 chain stitches to move to the other side of the starting chain.

Let’s work the same stitches again, but backward: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 dc in one st, 3 dc in one st, 3 dc in one st.

Close the round by making a slip stitch in the top of the first dc.

The round ends at the top of the wider end of the petal, so you have to weave in the yarn end with a tapestry needle.

Alternative Way of Working the Petal

Alternatively, to end the round on the other end (pointy end), you can work the petal in this way:

Start: 7 ch

1 ch, 1 sc in the 2nd stitch (counting from the hook), 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 dc, 2 dc in one st, 3 dc in one st, 7 dc in one stitch, (we move to the other side of the starting chain), 3 dc in one st, 2 dc in one st, 1 dc, 1 hdc, 1 hdc, 1 sc, sl st.

You can crochet over the remaining yarn end when moving to the other side of the starting chain.

The Line in the Middle

We work this line right between the two rows of stitches. Insert your hook in the top “hole”, where you worked many double crochets (6 to be exact). Now grab the yarn with the hook, and pull up a loop. Insert your hook in the “hole” below, grab the yarn, and pull it out again, creating a slip stitch. Repeat it until you reach the bottom of the petal.

The Line on the Edges

Insert your hook in the pointy tip of the petal. Now grab the yarn with the hook, and pull up a loop. Insert your hook under the top part of the next stitch, as if you wanted to make a regular stitch. Grab the yarn, and pull it out again, creating a slip stitch. Repeat it until you go around the whole petal.

Stalk

Start: 30 ch (or as many as you want)

Row 1: 1 ch, 1 sc in each st (30)

Assembly Instructions

I’m not going to lie, the assembly of this crochet flower applique is messy and the final result is quite wobbly. Each part has to be attached individually, which leaves a lot of ends to weave in. You will need yarn in the colors you used for the flower and a tapestry needle or a crochet hook.

Start by arranging the eight petals around the center, and then join them together with the remaining yarn.

Turn the petals upside down and sew them with yellow yarn to the middle part of the flower center.

Use green yarn to attach the leaves to the stem in desired places.

Sew the stem to the back side of the petals or to the center of the flower.
