Heart Stitch Instructions

HEART STITCH – Turn your work just enough to complete the following stitches around the post of the dc below, going down the post, (SC, HDC, DC, 2 TRB, SLP ST) to make one half of the heart. Next, turn your work just enough so that you can complete the following stitches around the post of the next dc going up the post, (SLP ST make SLP ST moderately loose here, CH 4, 1TRB, DC, HDC, SC) to create the second half of the heart. Then cross over and close the base of the heart by executing a SLP ST in the SC of the opposite side of the heart. MAKE SURE TO SC DIRECTLY AT THE BASE OF THE HEART YOU JUST MADE, WHICH WILL BE THE DC THAT HOLDS THE SECOND HALF OF THE HEART.

Round Instructions

RND 1: CH 3 join in ring or magic ring, CH 3 (counts as DC), 10 dc in ring, SLP ST in third ch of beginning ch3 (11dc). Please count the beginning ch3 as 1dc throughout the pattern.

RND 2: CH 3, dc at the base of ch3, 2dc in each stitch around, SLP ST in third ch of beg ch3 (22 dc).

Please complete what is between * * the number of times stated throughout the pattern.

RND 3: CH 3, 2dc in nxt st, *1 dc in nxt st, 2 dc in nxt st* 10x, SLP ST in third ch of beg ch3 (33 dc).

RND 4: CH 3, 1dc in nxt st, 2dc in nxt st, *1 dc in nxt st 2x, 2 dc in nxt st* 10x, SLP ST in third ch of beg ch3 (44 dc).

RND 5-6: CH 3, dc in each st around, SLP ST in third ch of beg ch3 (44 dc).

RND 7: CH 3, dc in each st around, before slip stitching in the third ch of beginning ch 3, drop MC to the back and pull up a loop of CC when you slip stitch in the third ch of beginning ch3 (44 dc).

Pulling up the CC before completing the row will make for a cleaner transition from one color to the other. Also, take the time to tie the two colors together before completing too many stitches in the next round.

RND 8: CH 1, sc in nxt st 9x, Heart Stitch; sc in nxt st 11x, Heart Stitch, sc in nxt st 11x; Heart Stitch, sc in next st 11x; Heart Stitch, sc in nxt st, drop CC to the back and pick MC back up, and SLP ST into beginning ch1 (44sc).

RND 9: CH 3, dc in each st around, SLP ST in third ch of beginning ch3 (44dc).

RND 10: CH 3, dc in each st around, before slip stitching in the third ch of beginning ch 3, drop MC to the back and pull up a loop of CC when you SLP ST in the third ch of beginning ch3 (44 dc).

RND 11: CH 1, sc in nxt st 4x, Heart Stitch; sc in nxt st 11x, Heart Stitch, sc in nxt st 11x; Heart Stitch, sc in next st 11x; Heart Stitch, sc in nxt st 6x, drop CC to the back and pick MC back up, and SLP ST into beginning ch1 (44sc).

RND 12: CH 3, dc in each st around, SLP ST in third ch of beginning ch3 (44dc).

RND 13: CH 1, sc in nxt st around, SLP ST in ch1 (44sc).

RND 14: CH 1, sc in nxt st 3x, *2sc in nxt st, sc in nxt st 4x* 7x; 2sc in nxt st, sc in nxt st 3x, 2sc in nxt st, SLP ST in beginning ch1 (53sc).

RND 15: CH 1, sc in each stitch around, SLP ST in beginning ch1 (53sc).

RND 16: CH 1, sc in each stitch around, drop MC to the back and pick CC back up, and pull up a loop of CC when you SLP ST in beginning ch1 (53 sc).

RND 18: CH 1, sc in each st around, SLP ST in beginning ch1. Fasten off and weave in ends. Shape all hearts into place and sew bows at the base of hearts.

I think a gingham check ribbon and solid ribbon would look fantastic, but I am snowed in up a holler in West Virginia, and I wasn’t able to get to my supply station. I think a drop pearl would be pretty at the bottom of the heart.
