Crochet Vase Cozy: A Fun Craft for Home Decor

Recommended Yarn: Yarn of any brand, fibre, and weight can be used; however, cotton, string, stiff/rigid acrylic, or raffia are recommended options.

Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Work a swatch to determine the optimal hook for your tension.

Cozy Size: Size to preference by adjusting the foundation chain stitch count (by a multiple of 8).

The cozy is constructed in the round, in two parts. The body of the cozy is worked in solid ESC stitches. The filet border of the cozy is worked separately in the opposite direction from the foundation round.

RND 1: PINK: Spotlight Marvel 4 Seasons Spotsaver USA Medium Weight yarn (Worsted) in Dark Pink. Hook: 5.5mm. Gauge: 8 ESCs = ~5.5cm/~2.2” long and single round height = ~1cm/~0.4”. RND 3: GREEN: Cleckheaton Country 8ply (DK) Wool in Soft Green. Hook: 4mm. Gauge: 8 ESCs = ~5.25cm/2”. Foundation Chain: 48. Relaxed circumference: ~31.5cm/12.4”. Cozy Body Round 2 repeats: 4. Picot Ch length: 7. A long chain was made and then tied around finished cozy. Yarn amount: ~21g/0.75Oz.

Insert hook in stitch and pull through a loop. Yarn over hook and pull yarn through first loop on hook only. Yarn over hook and pull yarn through both remaining loops on hook.

Crab Stitch or SC can be substituted, if preferred.

Insert hook in stitch, then yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over hook and pull yarn through first loop on hook only (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360° clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull yarn through both loops on hook.

The pattern instructions have been written in a way such that the cozy can be easily sized according to personal preference in both circumference and length.

Choose a foundation chain that is a multiple of 8. The cozy will stretch a little if synthetic yarn is used for its construction, so ensure the foundation chain is on the tighter side. (For example, if your object circumference measurement corresponds with 60 stitches with your tension/preferred hook, then use 56 stitches as your foundation chain length.)

To shape to a vase/pot/jar that does not have a consistent circumference, in each ESC round after the first, in the back of the cozy only:

• Narrow the cozy circumference by skipping one or more stitches from the previous round, or working one or more ESCs over two stitches from the previous round, or
• Widen the cozy circumference by working two ESCs in one or more stitches from the previous round.

Beads can be added to the picots by extending the picot loops from those in the standard pattern. Work extra chains in addition to the standard seven chains, according to preference. Pull the entire picot loop through the bead and then knot the loop, such as to keep the bead secure.

Small tassels can also be added to each of the picot loops.

A fringe can optionally be added to each ESC St front loop of the last ESC round of the cozy body. Either omit the Spn St round or work this into the BLO of the last ESC round as per standard pattern instructions.

Construction is summarised as:

Make cozy body first:

• Foundation chain (with Sl St to form circle).
• Three plus rounds of ESC stitches (according to preference).
• One round of Spn St in BLO.

Make cozy border next, beginning in foundation chains and working in the opposite direction:

• Shell round.
• Shell with picot round.

Ch a multiple of 8 stitches, that fits the selected vase or pot (also noting tip regarding sizing). Ensuring the FC are not twisted, close the circle by Sl St into the first FC.

Rounds 1 to 3+ – ESC

Ch 1 and then ESC in first FC. ESC in each subsequent FC around. Sl St into beg ESC to complete the round.

As per Round 1, except each ESC will be worked into an ESC from the previous round.

Repeat Round 2 until cozy body is the desired size.

Ch 1, and then Spn St in BLO of first ESC. Spn St in the BLO of each subsequent ESC around. Sl St into Beg Spn St to finish. Sew in end.

Special Stitch Instructions for this round:

Shell: DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC.

Rotate the cozy such that Border Rounds 1 and 2 will be worked in the opposite direction to the cozy body rounds. Join yarn in the first FC. Ch 1 and then SC in first FC. Ch 1, Sk 3 FCs, and then Shell in next FC. *Ch 1, Sk 3 FCs and then SC in next FC. Ch 1, Sk 3 FCs, and then Shell in next FC.* Repeat the stitches between the * * until reaching the last three FCs in the round. Ch 1, Sk last three FCs, and then Sl St into beg SC to complete the round.

Note:

The picot (underlined stitch sequence below) can be easily resized according to preference. To make the picot smaller, work a smaller number of Ch before working the Sl St. To make the picot bigger, work a larger number of Ch before working the Sl St. For example, the pink cozy has Ch 9 picot instead of the standard Ch 7 picot. Ch 9 was first constructed, and then the Sl St was made into the 9th Ch from hook (which is also the first Ch made for the picot). A knot was then tied in the picot (for some added texture and picot definition).

Special Stitches for this round:

Beg Picot Shell (stitch sequence): Ch 3 (counts as first HDC and Ch 1), Sk next DC, and then DC over next Ch 1 Sp. *Ch 1, Sk next DC, and then DC over next Ch 1 Sp.* Ch 7 and then Sl St into 7th chain from hook (picot constructed). Construct stitches between the * * twice. Ch 1, Sk next DC, and then HDC over next Ch 1 Sp.

Picot Shell (stitch sequence): Sk next SC and then HDC over Ch 1 Sp. *Ch 1, Sk next DC, and then DC over next Ch 1 Sp.* Repeat stitches between the * * once. Ch 7 and then Sl St into 7th chain from hook (picot constructed). Construct stitches between the * * twice. Ch 1, Sk next DC, and then HDC over next Ch 1 Sp.

Sl St from first SC into first Ch 1 Sp, and then commence Beg Picot Shell stitch sequence in this Ch 1 Sp. Construct Picot Shell sequence over each Round 1 Shell, repeating this sequence around, until reaching the first SC (from which beg Sl St was made). Sk first SC and beg Sl St, and then Sl St into second Ch of Ch 3 to finish. Sew in end.
