Materials Used:

  • Bernat Softee Baby Cotton in Soft Plum , – 2 skeins for sizes S-L, 3 skeins for size XL
  • Size H/8 – 5.00 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends

sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet

Gauge:

4″ x 4″ = 14 hdc, 10 rows

Sizes:

Bust measurement: S = 34″, M = 38″, L = 42″, XL = 46″

Length is customized to your preference.

Notes:

The yoke is crocheted in the round, from the top down in one piece. The front and back panels are worked in rows from the collar down, then seamed up each side.

To make an increase, place 2 stitches in the same stitch.

The number of stitches and/or increases required per size are indicated in parentheses as follows: (S, M, L, XL).

Instructions:

Yoke (worked in rounds):

Ch (78, 78, 87, 87). Sl st to beginning chain, making sure yarn is not twisted.

Round 1:

Ch 1, hdc in same ch and in each ch around and sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (78, 78, 87, 87) sts

Round 2:

Repeat round 1. (78, 78, 87, 87) sts

Round 3:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in the next st, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * around, sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (104, 104, 116, 116) sts

Round 4:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st around and sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (104, 104, 116, 116) sts

Round 5:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, *hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * around, sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (130, 130, 145, 145) sts

Round 6:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each st around and sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (130, 130, 145, 145) sts

Round 7:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each of the the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st, *hdc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * around, sl st to beginning hdc (do not turn work). (156, 156, 174, 174) sts

Back Panel (worked in rows):
Row 8:

Ch 1, hdc in same st and in each of the next (47, 47, 56, 56) sts, turn. (48, 48, 57, 57) sts

Row 9:

  • Size S: Ch 1, hdc in same st and each of the next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * across to the last 6 sts, hdc in each of the last 6 sts, turn. (58 sts)
  • Size M: Ch 1, hdc in same st and in the next st, 2 hdc in next st, * hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * across, turn. (64 sts)
  • Size L: Ch 1, hdc in same st and each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * across to the last 4 sts, hdc in each of the last 4 sts, turn. (70 sts)
  • Size XL: Ch 1, hdc in the same st and in the next st, 2 hdc in the next st, * hdc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 hdc in the next st; repeat from * across, turn. (76) sts
Row 10:

Ch 1, sc in 1st st, *ch 3, skip 2 st, sc in next st; repeat from * across, turn.

Row 11:

Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in same st, sc in ch-3 sp, *3dc in sc, sc in ch-3 sp; repeat from * across, 2 dc in last sc, turn.

Row 12:

Ch 1, sc in 1st st, ch 3, *skip 3 sts, sc in next st, ch 3; repeat from * across, ending with a sc in the turning ch-3 sp, turn.

Continue repeating rows 11 and 12 until your top is the desired length, ending on a row 11. For the size small pictured in this post, I repeated fifteen times. Fasten off.

Front Panel:
Row 8:

Skip 30 sts from where you finished row 8 of the back panel. Attach yarn in next st, ch 1 and hdc in same st and in each of the next (47, 47, 56, 56) sts, turn. (48, 48, 57, 57) sts

Work rows 9-12 the same as the back panel.

Continue repeating rows 11 and 12 until the front panel is the same length as the back panel, ending on a row 11.

Edging at collar:

Attach yarn at back of neck hole, ch 1 and sc in same st, sc in each st around. (78, 78, 87, 87) sts. Fasten off.

To Finish:

Cut a length of yarn and using a tapestry needle, sew side seams, beginning at lower edge and ending (4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5)” below the point where the shell pattern of the body meets the yoke. Fasten off and weave in all ends.
