Materials Needed for Fancy Knitting

You'll need:

  • 200g of Alize "Angora Gold Batik" yarn (500m/100g) (80% acryl, 10% mohair, 10% wool)
  • 300g of 100% wool yarn Alize "Cashmere Fine" (450m/100g)
  • Knitting needles size 4

Understanding Fancy Knitting Techniques

Fancy knitting is a little bit different from ordinary knitting: two or three yarn threads are used in work by turn due to the pattern.

The thread that isn't used in right side rows is kept behind your work, while in wrong side rows, it is in front of it (see photos 1 and 2).

Before changing colours, straighten your work on the right-hand needle, draw the broaching thread along already knit stitches, and hold them with your right hand until you make some new stitches. Broachings 3-4 stitches long should be bound by means of overwinding threads of yarn. Start the next row with a new colour of yarn, and make a selvedge stitch.

Instructions for Knitting

Start knitting with the side insets according to scheme A. Cast on the required number of stitches and knit according to the skirt height design.

To determine the size of the main part of your work, subtract the width of the inset from 1/2 of hips circumference + 4 cm (for a loose fit). Knit the pattern according to scheme B, while the wrong side rows should be knitted with one-colour yarn. The pattern drawn with crosses and right side rows are knitted with "Batik" yarn.

Define the stitches control. Count the required number of stitches according to this scheme and adjust until you reach the full number of patterns + 3 stitches for symmetry. Knit two pieces of cloth, beginning with a 1 x 1 rib. Use the main yarn for the right side and an auxiliary yarn for the wrong side. The height of the rib should match the inset rib height. After that, proceed to fancy knitting.

Sew the parts together using a kitchener stitch with the side insets. Cast on stitches at the top of your skirt and knit 4 cm using stockinette stitch. Bind off the stitches, twist your work, and sew along the casting line. Finally, insert the elastic ribbon.
