How to Crochet a Stylish Bag with Caron Cotton Cakes Yarn

You’ll Need:

185 yards of Caron Cotton Cakes yarn;

Crochet hooks 4 mm and 5 mm;

Stitch markers.

Size:

approx. 8” wide and 7” tall.

 

Instructions

Starting with 4mm hook and solid color

1st Round

: Ch-23. 6hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 20 sts, 6hdc in last. Turn to work up other side: hdc in next 20 sts. Do not join. (52);

2nd Round

: * hdc in next, 2hdc in next * repeat between * * 2 more times, hdc in next 20 sts. Repeat between * * 3 times, hdc in next 20 sts. Do not join. (58);

3rd Round

: Hdc in first st. * hdc in next 2 sts, 2hdc in next * repeat between * * 2 more times, hdc in 20 sts. Repeat between * * 3 times, hdc in next 19 sts. Do not join. (64);

4th Round

: Hdc in first st. * hdc in 3 sts, 2hdc in next * repeat between * * 2 more times, hdc in 20 sts. Repeat between * * 3 times, hdc in next 19 sts. Do not join. (70);

With contrasting color and 5mm hook, join to top of first hdc.

5th Row

: Ch-3, pull up a loop in 2nd, front loop of 3rd, back loop of 3rd, first actual st and next st. (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops. Ch-1. * Pull up a loop in center of last star st, side of last star st, bottom of star st (same as last loop of the previous star), in next st and next st. (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops. Ch-1. * Repeat between * * around. Sc in same as last st. Join to top of first star st. (35 star sts);

6th Row

: Ch-1, turn, 2 hdc in center of each star st. Join to top of first hdc with sl st. (70);

7th Row

: Ch-3, turn, pull up a loop in 2nd, front loop of 3rd, back loop of 3rd, first actual st and next st. (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops. Ch-1. * Pull up a loop in center of last star st, side of last star st, bottom of star st (same as last loop of the previous star), in next st and next st. (6 loops on hook). Yarn over, pull through all loops. Ch-1. * Repeat between * * around. Sc in same as last st. Join to top of first star st. (35 star sts).

Repeat rows 6 & 7 six times.

Repeat row 6. (8 complete rows of star stitches)

 

Top of Bag

With base color and 4mm hook

1st Row

: Ch-1, turn. Hdc in each st around. Do not join. Work in spiral using stitch markers to mark the first st of the row;

2nd-5th Rows

: Hdc in each st around;

6th Row

: Sc in each st around. Fasten off and weave in ends.

 

Straps

1st Row

: Ch-7, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in across. (6);

2nd Row and All Following Rows

: About 31” in length: Ch-1, turn, sc in each to end. (6).

Position strap on opposite sides and sew into place.
