Worsted weight/ size #4 yarn
7 – 8 colors
Less than 1 oz/ 52 oz ea

Gauge
18 sc x 21 rows = 4” (blocked)

Terms/ Stitches used

St: Stitch
Ch: Chain
RS: Right side
Sc: Single crochet

Notes
  • These squares are worked from the bottom up in rows, with a chain and turn at the beginning of the row.
  • Begin with a ch 30 in color A, turn, and start in the 2nd ch from the hook. Each row begins with a “ch 1, turn” and all st counts are 29 sc.
  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
  • The odd rows are the right side.
  • This whole pattern is worked in sc.
  • Your coaster may not be perfectly rectangular when you’re done, but the Border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this.
  • To conserve yarn, color A is not carried behind colors B – G, it’s only used where it’s called for. 2 ends of color A were used and then dropped down the WS and picked up when necessary on the next row. If you carry A through the whole square, you may run out of yarn per the estimates and your coaster could be bulky.

In the photos: Color A is tan, color B is purple, color C is blue, color D is green, color E is yellow, color F is orange, color G is red, and color H is dark gray. Pound of Love was used for colors A and H and Brava Worsted was used for all others.

Notes on carrying yarn on the Rainbow Heart Coaster crochet pattern
For yarn conservation and clarity purposes, the colors are not carried throughout the coasters. Instead I used “bobbins” or individual stands of color all the sections of color through the design.

Below are 2 close up photos of the coaster, showing all the colors being used separately with separate strands of yarn. If you’d like to carry the yarn (tbh I don’t suggest it for the best results), I do highly suggest while carrying the inactive yarn with the RS facing, make sure it’s behind the previous row’s stitches. And when carrying the inactive yarn with the WS facing, make sure it’s in front of the previous row’s stitches. Don’t pull the carried yarn too tight or let it hang loose (try to keep it even with the stitches), as it can distort your square’s final look. Blocking may help even out some distortion or bulkiness of the center that may occur.

For this technique, I prefer to use individual strands for all the colors, even the main color. I change colors on the final pull through of the sc and drop the inactive yarn down the WS and pick it back up as I work the rows back and forth. It can be a bit challenging to do this with so many colors but this is a nice small project and a good opportunity to practice. It was a lot when I worked on the first coaster but by the 5th it wasn’t so bad.

Remember: Your coasters may not be perfectly rectangular when you’re done, but the border and blocking (which is highly suggested) can help this. The seaming can also even out some size inconsistency.
