How to Create a Beautiful Crochet Mandrake

Materials

This patterns uses a 2mm hook and brown, green, grey and black 4 ply wool. It is written in American crochet notation. The finished mandrake is 5.5 cm tall.

Head

With brown 4 ply wool

• Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
• Round 2: increase in every stitch (8 stitches)
• Round 3: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)
• Round 4: sc in each stitch (12 stitches)
• Round 5: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)

Stuff the head

• Round 6: decrease around (4 stitches)

Body

• Round 7: increase in every stitch (8 stitches) (back loops only)
• Round 8: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)
• Round 9: sc in the first 2 stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (16 stitches)
• Rounds 10 – 11: sc in each stitch (16 stitches) (2 rounds)
• Round 12: sc in the first 2 stitches, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (12 stitches)
• Round 13: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)

Stuff the body

• Round 14: decrease until the hole closes.

Fasten off, weave in end.

Arms (Make Two)

• Round 4: sc in the first two stitches, increase in the next stitch – repeat (24 stitches)

Leaves (Make 7)

With green 4 ply wool

• Round 1: 4 sc in a magic ring (4 stitches)
• Round 2: increase in every stitch (8 stitches)
• Round 3: sc in each stitch (8 stitches)
• Round 4: sc in the first stitch, increase in the next stitch – repeat (12 stitches)
• Rounds 5 – 7: sc in each stitch (12 stitches) (3 rounds)
• Round 8: sc in the first stitch, decrease the next two stitches together – repeat (8 stitches)
• Round 9: decrease around (4 stitches)

Fasten off, weave in end.

With brown 4 ply wool for the stem

For 6 of the leaves, attach the wool to the leaf, chain 5, turn, sc 4 back along the chain to the leaf, fasten off and weave in ends.

For one leaf, attach the wool to the leaf, chain 3, turn, sc 2 back along the chain to the leaf, fasten off and weave in ends.

Sew the 6 long-stemmed leaves to the top of the head in a circle, sew the short-stemmed leaf in the centre.

Roots

Attach brown 4 ply wool to the arms and legs and chain 3, 4 or 5. Fasten off and weave the end back into the leg along the chain.

Embroider the face. I know the mandrake is supposed to cry when it’s uprooted, but I made it happy anyway.
