Hello everybody! Do you remember my previous post with a tutorial on how to knit basketball booties for a little boy? Of course, I can't offer to forget about our small ladies. I prepared a tutorial on how to knit an amazing cardigan, that looks like a dress with a handband.

Cardigan Details

For a large premature baby or an early/small newborn baby

Yarn – any DK (tension 22sts over 4”/10cm) - requires around 32g

Needles – 4mm

Requires 2 small buttons

Worked from the neck downwards

Knitting Instructions

Cast on 56sts

  • Rows 1 & 2: S1, knit to end
  • Row 3: S1, k1, yrn, k2tog (makes a buttonhole), knit to end of row
  • Rows 4 & 5: S1, knit to end
  • Row 6: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 7: S1, k5, *yrn, k4, repeat from * to last 2sts, k2 (68sts)
  • Row 8: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 9: S1, knit to end
  • Row 10: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 11: S1, knit to end
  • Row 12: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 13: S1, k5, *yrn, k1, yrn, k4, repeat from * to last st, k2 (92sts)
  • Row 14: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 15: S1, knit to end
  • Row 16: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 17: S1, knit to end
  • Row 18: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 19: S1, k1, yrn, k2tog (makes a buttonhole), k3, *yrn, k1, yrn, k6, repeat from * to last st, k1 (116sts)
  • Row 20: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Rows 21, 22, 23, 24: S1, knit to end
  • Row 25: S1, k18, cast off 21sts, k35, cast off 21sts, k18
  • Row 26: S1, knit to end (74sts)
  • Row 27: S1, k3, *(k2, m1) repeat from * to last 6sts, k6 (106sts)
  • Row 28: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4

Continue with the Following Rows

  • Row 29: S1, k5, *yrn, k2tog, k1, repeat from * to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 30: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 31: S1, knit to end
  • Row 32: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • Row 33: S1, knit to end
  • Row 34: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4
  • **Repeat from previous row instructions twice more**
  • Row 47: S1, k5, *yrn, k2tog, k1, repeat from * to last 4sts, k4

Row 48: S1, k3, purl to last 4sts, k4

Knit 5 rows.

Cast off loosely.

Darn away ends.

Sew on buttons.

Baby Headband

Yarn – any DK (tension 22sts over 4”/10cm) - requires around 6 - 8g

Needles – 4mm

Cast on 56sts

  • Knit 4 rows
  • Row 5: S1, knit to end
  • Row 6: S1, purl to last st, k1
  • Row 7: S1, k1, *yrn, k2tog, k1, repeat from * to end
  • Row 8: S1, purl to last st, k1
  • Knit 5 rows

Cast off, using a stretchy cast off.

Join the seam.

Darn away ends.
