Easy Crochet Crown Pattern for All Ages with Special Stitches and Edging Techniques

Materials

  • RED HEART® Fashion Crochet, size 5: 2 balls 90G Gold/Gold.
  • Crochet Hook: 2.25mm [US B-1]
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

28 sts = 4” (10 cm). Height of 6-row pattern repeat = 2¼” (5.5 cm) unblocked. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge given.

Size Information

Directions are given for size Baby/Toddler. Changes for Child, Preteen, and Adult are in parentheses.

Finished Sizes:

  • 15 (17½, 20, 22½)” (38 [44.5, 51, 57] cm) in circumference, blocked.
  • 4” (10 cm) tall (all sizes).

Special Stitches

Picot (right-handed): Ch 3, insert hook through front loop and left vertical bar of previous sc, yarn over, draw through all loops on hook.

Notes

6-row repeat = Can be stretched from 2½-3” (6.5-7.5 cm). You may vary the size of the crown by how much you stretch out the points during blocking.

Crown Instructions

Ch 9.

Row 1 (WS): Dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 2, skip next ch, 3 dc in next ch, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2 (RS): Ch 5 (counts as dc, ch 2 here and throughout), skip next ch-2 space, dc in next dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, dc in each of last 2 dc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), dc in next dc, ch 2, 3 dc in ch-2 space, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next ch-2 space, dc in next dc, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, dc in 3rd ch of beginning ch-5, turn.

Row 4: Ch 5, skip next ch-2 space, [dc in next dc, ch 2] 3 times, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, dc in each of last 2 dc, turn.

Row 5: Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc, [ch 2, dc in next dc] 3 times, ch 2, skip next 2 ch, dc in 3rd ch of beginning ch-5, turn.

Row 6: Ch 5, skip next ch-2 space, [dc in next dc, ch 2] 5 times, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, dc in each of last 2 dc, turn.

Row 7: Ch 3, dc in next dc, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-2 space, ch 2, skip next 2 dc, dc in next dc, turn, leaving remaining sts unworked.

Rows 8-36 (42, 48, 54): Repeat Rows 2-7 (4 [5, 6, 7] times; then repeat Rows 2-6 once. Fasten off.

Assembly Instructions

Sew last row to the bottom of the first row to form a tube. Weave in ends.

Top Edging

Round 1: With right side facing, join yarn with a slip stitch in first row-end dc at the end of Row 1 (on point side of crown), ch 1, *(3 sc, picot) in each of first 5 row-end sts, [3 sc, picot] twice in next ch-5 space, (3 sc, picot) in each of next 5 ch-2 spaces, repeat from * around, join with a slip st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Bottom Edging

Attach thread around any dc on the bottom edge of the crown with right side facing.

Round 1: With right side facing, join yarn with a slip stitch in any row-end dc on the straight edge of the crown, ch 1, 3 sc in each row-end st around, join with a slip stitch in first sc – 108 (126, 144, 162) sc.

Round 2: Ch 5, skip next 2 sc, *dc in next sc, ch 2, skip next 2 sc; repeat from * around, join with a slip stitch in 3rd ch of beginning ch-5 – 36 (42, 48, 54) ch-2 spaces.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in first st, *2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next dc; repeat from * around, ending last repeat at **, join with a slip stitch in first sc.

Rounds 4-5: Repeat Rounds 2-3.

Rounds 6-7: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with a slip stitch in first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing Touches

Weave in ends. Starch and block crown to the head circumference of the person who will wear the crown. Be sure to measure the head at the position where you wish to place the crown.
