Knitting Pattern for Children's Sweater (Ages 1-3 Years)

You'll Need:

1½ 4-oz. skeins of 4-ply knitting worsted;

Knitting needles (size 6);

Knitting needles (size 10).

Size:

1—2 and 3 years.

Gauge:

4 stitches to 1 inch.

Instructions

Back

With size 10 needles, cast on 44 stitches (2 years: 48 stitches—3 years: 52 stitches). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows then work in pattern as follows:

Row 1 (right side)—P 4, (2 years: P 6—3 years: P 8), K 4, * P 4, K 4; repeat from * ending P 4, (2 years: P 6—3 years: P 8).

Row 2—K 4, (2 years: K 6—3 years: K 8), P 4, * K 4, P 4; repeat from * ending K 4, (2 years: K 6—3 years: K 8).

Repeat above 2 rows, working a cable twist over the ribs of K 4 on the 5th and every 6th row thereafter as follows: slip the first 2 stitches on D P N, hold in back of work, K next 2 stitches then K the 2 stitches from D P N.

Work in pattern until piece measures 5½ inches (2 years: 6 inches—3 years: 7 inches) or desired length to underarm. Bind off 3 stitches at beginning of each of the next 2 rows for underarm (2 years: 4 stitches—3 years: 5 stitches). Work even until piece measures 2 inches (2 years: 2½ inches—3 years: 3 inches). Starting on right side, continue in pattern over the first and last 7 stitches (2 years: 8 stitches—3 years: 9 stitches) and work the center stitches in garter stitch for 8 rows. Bind off 7 stitches at beginning of each of the next 2 rows for shoulders. Bind off remaining stitches for back of neck.

Front

Work as given for back.

Sew shoulders together across bound off stitches.

Sleeves

With size 10 needles on right side of garment, pick up 32 stitches (2 years: 36 stitches—3 years: 40 stitches). Work in pattern as follows:

Row 1—K 6, (2 years: K 7—3 years: K 8); P 4; K 12, (2 years: K 14—3 years: K 16); P 4; K 6, (2 years: K 7—3 years: K 8).

Row 2—P 6, (2 years: P 7—3 years: P 8); K 4; P 12, (2 years: P 14—3 years: P 16); K 4; P 6, (2 years: P 7—3 years: P 8).

Repeat the above 2 rows working a cable twist over the ribs of K 4 until sleeve measures 6 inches (2 years: 7 inches—3 years: 8 inches) or desired length to cuff. Change to size 6 needles and P 1 row on wrong side decreasing to 26 stitches (2 years: 28 stitches—3 years: 30 stitches). Work in ribbing of K 1, P 1, for 6 rows. Bind off. Sew sleeve and underarm seams.
