NOTES:

Read the pattern carefully before starting.

This pattern is worked from the bottom (brim/band) up.

The beginning ch 1 does not count as a stitch!

I recommend using Clover Stitch Markers to mark the beginning of the round. Remember to move them as you progress!
Not all heads conform to size by age, so make sure to measure for a more accurate fit. If you want to adjust the size of your beanie, you should add/subtract 3 rows to the brim pattern. If you want your beanie to be longer or slouchier, add a few more rounds before working on the crown of your beanie. Note that the main (body) pattern repeat is a multiple of 3 stitches.

Try working your waistcoat stitch as loosely as possible, especially if you are a tight crocheter. The space where you need to insert your hook can get very tight, making crocheting the waistcoat stitch hard on your hands.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Gauge:
brim: 7 sts x 7 rows = 2 inches
body: 8 sts x 4 rounds = 2 inches (in pattern)

Skill level: intermediate

Finished measurement: approx. 9 (height) x 20 (brim circumference) inches (unstretched)

MATERIALS:

Clover Amour Crochet Hook I (5.5 mm)
Clover Amour Crochet Hook J (6 mm)
Clover Patchwork Mini Scissors
Clover Jumbo Tapestry Needle (Bent Point)
Clover Tape Measure
worsted weight (#4) yarn (approximately 150-180 yds)
pom-pom (optional)

ABBREVIATIONS:

blo: back loop only
ch(s): chain(s)
dc: double crochet
dc2tog: double crochet two (2) stitches together (decrease)
pm: place marker
rep: repeat
sc: single crochet
slst(s) :slip stitch(es)
st(s): stitch(es)

stsc (stacked single crochet): This replaces the beginning ch 3. Do not ch 1, insert hook into the first stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop, just like you would with a regular single crochet stitch (two loops on hook), yarn over, and pull through both loops on hook. You just completed your first single crochet. Now, find the sidebar of the single crochet stitch, insert your hook through the sidebar of the stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), yarn over, and pull through both loops on the hook. Your Stacked Single Crochet is complete.

wc–waistcoat (or knit stitch crochet): Insert the hook in the center of the stitch, between the legs of the ‘V’ shape, yarn over and pull up a loop to the height of the current round, yarn over again, and pull through both loops on hook.
