Guide to the Crochet Bean Stitch

Introduction to the Crochet Bean Stitch
The crochet bean stitch is a unique and fun stitch that adds a lovely texture to your project. It creates a beautiful raised "bean" effect that gives your work a cozy and charming look. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find yourself enjoying the rhythmic and rewarding process of working this stitch. It's a great way to add dimension and interest to your crochet pieces, making them stand out from the rest. Give it a try, and you'll soon be hooked on the delightful crochet bean stitch!
You can use any yarn and hook you prefer to crochet the bean stitch. I’m using Debbie Bliss Dulcie yarn and a 5mm crochet hook for this tutorial.
Stitches Used & Code (US Term)
- ch = chain
- YO = yarn over hook
- sk = skip
- st = stitch(es)
- REP = repeat
Notes
For the bean stitch, you can start with an odd number of chains.
This crochet bean stitch is a 1-row repeat (row 2).
Crochet Bean Stitch Pattern
Row 1
Step 1: Start with a chain that is an odd number. I made 17 chains.
Step 2: Insert hook into the third chain from the hook and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
Step 3: YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
Step 4: YO, insert hook into the same stitch and pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
Step 5: YO and pull through all 6 loops on hook.
Step 6: ch 1 to secure the stitch. (Check picture below)
You just made your first bean stitch. To make the next bean stitch and complete the row, just follow the instructions below.
*sk the next chain, and work into the next stitch following steps 2-6 above* REP from *TO* across. Total of 8 bean stitches. Check picture below.
Row 2
Turn, ch 1 (do not count as a stitch), *sk the first stitch (the chain which secures the bean stitch), and work the bean stitch into the next stitch (steps 2-6 above)* REP from *TO* across. Total of 8 bean stitches. Check picture below.
Repeat row 2 for the remainder of the project.
