Materials Needed for This Cluster Stitch Square

Yarn – For this pattern, any weight of yarn can be used. The beautiful texture of this stitch would pop beautifully. For this Tutorial, I have used – Stylecraft Jeanie Denim look, Aran #4 weight; (60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic, 230 yards/210m per 3.5oz/100g)

  • US size J (6 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Yarn needle

Gauge

15 sts x 9 rows = 10cm/4” measured over hdc with hook used 6mm.

Pattern Notes

  • Unless otherwise stated, turning chains do not count as a stitch.
  • The width can be varied by increasing or decreasing the number of starting chains; note that it must be a multiple of 2 plus 1.

Special Stitches

  • Half double cluster (hdccl): Yarn over, insert hook in last st used on the previous row, yarn over, pull up a loop, [yarn over, insert hook in next st, yarn over, pull up a loop] twice, yarn over, draw through all 7 loops on hook.
  • Half double 3 together (hdc3tog): [Yarn over, insert hook into next st, yarn over, pull up loop] 3 times, draw through all 7 loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions for the Cluster Stitch Square

  • Chain 35
  • Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. 34 sc
  • Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as a hdc), starting in the first st, hdc3tog, *ch 1, hdccl, rep from * to last st, hdc in last st, turn. 15 hdccl, 16 ch-1-sp, 2 hdc, 1 hdc3tog
  • Row 3: Ch 1 (do not count as a sc), sc in each st and ch-1-sp across, turn. 34 sc
  • Rows 4 – 19: Rep Rows 2 – 3
  • Note: Rep rows 2 – 3 as desired.

Finishing

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each st around, ch 1 at each corner, join with a sl st to beginning chain.

Fasten off, block to measurement.
