Pattern Notes
- Directions are written in U.S. terms.
- Watch out for directions “TURN” and “DO NOT TURN” as some of these rows are worked backwards.
- The reverse single crochet (or crab stitch) can be tricky if you’ve never done it. You will work backward to create a gorgeous spiral.
- Have fun using a different color for the border and/or fringe, or include two colors for each fringe knot instead of two strands of one color.
- Ch 1 at end of each row does not count as a stitch.
- Each row will have a total of 10 stitches. (10 sts)
Magic Cup Carpet Crochet Pattern
Row 1: Fsc 10 (or, if you prefer, ch 11, sc in 2nd ch from hook and across remaining chains. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
Row 2: [Sk 1 st. (sc, dc) in next st.] Repeat across. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
Row 3: [Sk 1 st. (sc, dc) in next st.] Repeat across. Ch 1, DO NOT TURN. (10 sts)
Row 4: Working backwards across the row, work 1 rsc in each st. Ch 1, DO NOT TURN. (10 sts)
Now you will have a nice spiral like this:
Row 5: Working in the spaces under the spirals, [sk 1 sp, (sc, dc) in next sp.] Repeat across. Ch 1, turn. (10 sts)
Row 6: [Sk 1 st. (sc, dc) in next st.] Repeat across. Ch 1, DO NOT TURN. (10 sts)
Row 7: Working backwards across the row, work 1 rsc in each st. Ch 1, DO NOT TURN. (10 sts)
Rows 8-10: Repeat Rows 5-7.
Row 11-12: Repeat Rows 5-6.
Row 13: Ch 1 more, Hdc in each st across. (10 sts)
Edging
Ch 2, work 13 sc evenly down the side, with last sc in the next corner.
Ch 2, work a sc in each st across the other end of the carpet. (10 sts)
Ch 2, work 13 sc evenly down the other side, with last sc in the next corner.
Ch 2, sl st in 1st hdc of row 13 to join.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Fringe
Cut 48 pieces of yarn, 5″ each. (This is a great time to use up another color of this yarn – even mixing two colors in each fringe space.)
From the back (wrong side) of the cup carpet, insert hook into each stitch, pull up a loop using two of your cut strands of yarn. Pull the tails of the yarn through the loop you have pulled up and then pull tails to tighten fringe knot. Continue fringe knots, adding fringe to 11 sts on each end of your rectangle.
When I’m all done with my projects I like to block them by covering with a sheet or pillowcase and ironing for a few seconds on a low heat setting. This helps the Cozy Cup Carpet lie flat and hold its shape a little better, and I normally do this for all of my projects. Just be careful not to ever hold it too long that you burn the yarn or fuse it together (especially dangerous with acrylic!)
