AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "GEM" HAT & BAG YARN, Article 144

  • 1 skein each of White and Red.
  • Aluminum crochet hook, size F or G.

Instructions

Basic Crochet Steps

With Red, ch 24, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, drop Red, attach White (when changing color always complete last half of last st worked with next color), ch 1 to turn all rows.

Creating the Potholder

2nd Row

Working over Red, work 1 s c in each s c, drop White.

3rd Row

With Red, working over White, work 1 s c in 1st st, * skip 1 s c of 1st row of Red, d c over next s c of same row inserting hook horizontally under the s c (this is called a post st), skip the s c in back of st just made (White row), s c in next s c, repeat from * across row, drop Red. Always work over color not used.

4th Row

With White, work 1 s c in each st, drop White.

5th Row

With Red, s c in 1st s c, * post st over next post st (inserting hook horizontally under d c of previous row), skip the s c in back of post st, s c in next s c, repeat from * across row. Repeat the last 2 rows 9 times, do not turn at end of last row.

Final Touches

Work a row of s c down the side of work, working 1 s c in each row, cut yarn. With Red, work a row of s c across the opposite side, then work a row of s c across the top of work, cut yarn.

With White, work a row of s c around the entire potholder, working 3 s c in each corner st, join, and cut yarn. With Red, work a row of sl sts around the entire potholder, join, and cut yarn.

With Red, cover a bone ring with s c and sew to potholder as illustrated.
