1 pattern repeat worked on size J/10 (6 mm) hook = 1 ¾” (before blocking)

Pattern Notes

Shawl is worked back and forth in rows. Border is worked along all four edges after central rectangle is completed.

NOTE: If you want a wider shawl, the stitch multiple is 6 (that is, for each additional increase of 1-3/4” in width, add 6 sts to base chain number given in instructions.)

Foundation Row

Pattern Rows

Row 1 (RS): Sc in first 2 sc, *ch 6, sk 4 sc, sc into ea of next 2 sc, rep from * across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next sc, *ch 2, sc into ch-6 sp, ch 2, dc in ea of next 2 sc, rep from * to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch 3, dc in first dc, *ch 3, sl st in next sc, ch 3, dc in ea of next 2 dc, rep from * ending with dc in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, turn.

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in ea of first 2 dc, *ch 4, sc in ea of next 2 dc, rep from * ending with sc in 3rd ch of beg ch-3, turn.

Border

Short-edge Border

Note: Border is worked along each short end of shawl first, then across long edges of shawl.

Row 1: Attach yarn at right corner of one short edge of shawl, ch 1, work 54 sc evenly across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, *skip next sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, rep from * across, ending with sc in last sc (27 shells). Fasten off.

Repeat Rows 1 & 2 across other short edge of shawl.

Long-edge Border

Attach yarn at right corner of one long edge of shawl.

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, *skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc, ch 3, dc in same sc, rep from * across, ending with sl st in last sc (53 shells). Fasten off.

Repeat Row 1 across other long edge of shawl. Weave in all tails.

Finishing

Block shawl: Treating shawl gently so as not to felt it, dampen shawl with cool to lukewarm water, then roll in towel to absorb excess moisture. Spread dry towels out on a flat space, lay shawl on top of towel and smooth out, shaping it to finished measurements. Cover with more towels and leave to dry.
