Materials
- Bernat Baby Sport Yarn in Baby Gray color – 1 skein
- 4 or 4.25 mm (U.S. G/6) crochet hook and tapestry needle
- Scissors – thread cutters
In this case, baby yarn may seem like an unusual choice for an elegant crochet shawl. But it is a lightweight yarn (#3) which comes in a generous skein: 350g (12.3 oz) and 1148m (1256 yd). Also, you have a few choices of solid colors: white, ecru, gray, and lavender.
As a result, it is enough to crochet the whole shawl and even add a boho fringe on two sides! In essence, the yarn is versatile, washable, and drapes nicely.
Crochet Stitches You Will Use
Crochet abbreviations we use for this pattern are adopted by the Craft Yarn Council (US terminology).
- ch – chain
- ch-sp – chain space
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- bo – bobble
- tr – treble
Furthermore, we have a bobble stitch tutorial if you are not familiar with this stitch or need a quick refresh. In brief, 4 bobble stitches connected by chain stitches form distinctive clusters in this pattern.
As a result, they look like the top part of a delicate flower, giving the shawl its elegant appearance. Once you master the cluster, the pattern becomes an easy repeat.
Special Cluster Stitch
How to crochet a cluster stitch for this shawl: BO+CH1+BO+CH1+BO. In summary, it is simply 4 bobble stitches connected by chain 1.
In detail, to make a cluster: Yarn over, then put the hook through the chain space of the previous row, and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook). Repeat this 2 more times – 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull it through all 7 loops, chain 1 to close the bobble stitch. Chain 1.
Repeat the same steps 3 more times – 3 bobble stitches separated by ch1. Complete the cluster by making the fourth bobble stitch: CL (cluster) BO+CH1+BO+CH1+BO.
From now on, we will refer to this sequence simply as CL.
Simple Crochet Shawl Design
To crochet the shawl, start at the bottom of the triangle and increase on both sides to achieve the desired size. The pattern has 2 rows you will be repeating for the whole project.
One row is a setup row that creates a foundation for cluster stitches. The second row has easy bobble clusters separated by a double crochet. In that case, each even row will have one more additional cluster:
- Row 2: 1 cluster;
- Row 4: 2 clusters;
- Row 5: 3 clusters, etc.
As a result, you can easily count your rows. In summary, there are 56 rows total in this shawl.

ROW 1: CH 9, TR into the first ch (it is a foundation triangle row). In this case, the first 4 chains represent the first treble, so you have 2 trebles connected with ch 4.
ROW 2: CH 4, turn, CL, TR.
ROW 3: CH 9, SC into the first CH-SP (after the first BO), CH1, SC into the second CH-SP, SC into the third CH-SP, CH4, TR into the top of CH4 of the previous row.
ROW 4: CH 4, turn, CL into the ch-sp, skip sc and ch-sp, DC into the next SC, CL into the ch-sp, TR.
Next, repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have completed 56 rows.
This lightweight boho shawl is easy to crochet! As illustrated, you will repeat 2 rows to complete your project. It works very quickly, so after a couple of rows, you’ll understand the design and won’t need any instructions.
Adding Fringe with Leftover Yarn
Finally, you are ready to add some finishing touches to your shawl. For this reason, cut the leftover yarn into equal pieces, approximately 8 inches long.
Next, take 2 pieces of yarn, fold them in half, and attach with a knot to the sides of your triangle shawl, as shown. Finally, secure each fringe with an additional double knot.
Finished Size
42″ x 42″ x 64″ (without the fringe)
