H hook, 2 colors of worsted weight yarn


Instructions

Creating the Base

With variegated yarn, ch 5, join with a sl st to form a ring.


Rounds

Round 1: ch 3, work 11 dc in the ring just formed, join with a sl st to the top of beg ch 3.

Round 2: ch 3, dc in the same st, 2 dc in each st around, join with a sl st to the top of ch 3 (total 24 stitches).

Round 3: ch 3, dc in the same st, dc in the next st, 2 dc in the next st, continue this around, join with a sl st to the top of ch 3 (total 36 stitches).

Round 4: ch 3, dc in the same st, dc in the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st, continue this around, join with a sl st to the top of ch 3 (total 48 stitches).

Round 5: ch 3, dc in the next 9 sts, skip 2 sts, ch 3, *dc in the next 10 sts, skip 2 sts, ch 3* repeat from *to* 3 times, join with a sl st to the top of ch 3. Fasten off yarn.


Adding the Color

Round 6: Join purple yarn in any ch 3 sp, ch 3, work 2 dcs, ch 2, and 3 dcs in the same sp. **(2 dcs in the next st, 1 dc in the next 2 sts)** repeat sts in ( ) 3 times, 2 dcs in the next st, in the next corner sp work 3 dcs, ch 2, 3 dcs, repeat from **to** 3 times, (2 dcs in the next st, 1 dc in the next 2 sts) repeat sts in ( ) 3 times, 2 dcs in the next st, join with a sl st to the top of ch 3.


Round 7: ch 2, hdc in the next 2 sts, *5 hdc in the next corner sp, hdc in the next 20 sts* repeat from *to* 3 times, 5 hdc in the next corner sp, hdc in the next 17 sts, join with a sl st to the top of ch 2. Fasten off yarn.


Note: The square will "puff" a bit in the center but will flatten out when it is joined. It also helps to pull on the corners a bit.


Chain Edging for Joining Squares

I am in the process of designing a chain stitch edging and will add it as soon as I am done.
