Materials:


– Worsted Weight Yarn in 4 colors plus black for the mouth and white for the eyes.
– Size H crochet hook
– Black buttons in various sizes

– Tapestry needle

Abbreviations:
Magic Ring Tutorial
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet

Monster Granny Square Pattern:
with color 1
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 HDC in ring, join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (16 HDC)
Round 3: 2 HDC in each stitch around, join, chain 1 (32 HDC)
change to color 2
Round 4: HDC in each stitch around, join (32 HDC)
Round 5: *chain 4 (loosely), skip 3 stitches, join with SC, repeat from * around. You should end up with 8 chain spaces. Join to the bottom of the first chain 4.
Round 6: Now working inside the chain 4 spaces… Chain 3 + 2 DC + Chain 1 + 3 DC all in same space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, Chain 1, *3 DC + Chain 1 + 3 DC all in same space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, Chain 1, Repeat from * around, slip stitch to join to the top of the first chain 3, fasten off.
change to color 3
Round 7: Starting in corner space… Chain 3 + 2 DC + Chain 1 + 3 DC all in same space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, *3 DC + Chain 1 + 3 DC all in same space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, Chain 1, 3 DC in next space, repeat from * around, slip stitch to join to the top of the first chain 3, fasten off.
with border color (I chose gray)

Round 8: Starting in corner space… attach yarn and chain 1 + SC + chain 1 + 2 SC all in same space, SC along each stitch in edge, when you get to the corners: 2 SC + chain 1 + 2 SC all in same space, continue along all edges and corners. Join to your first chain 1, fasten off and weave in all ends.

One eyed monster:
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 6 SC in ring, pull tight and join, chain 1
Round 2: 2 SC in each stitch around, join, fasten off leaving long tail.

Sew buttons onto eyes and sew eyes onto square.

Two eyed monster:
Larger eye: Magic ring, chain 2 and make 10 DC in ring, pull tight and join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Smaller eye: Magic ring, chain 1 and make 8 SC in ring, pull tight and join, fasten off leaving long tail.
Sew buttons onto eyes and sew eyes onto square.

Feet:
Right foot: Chain 4, SC in second chain from hook, SC in next, slip stitch in last
Left foot: Chain 4, slip stitch in second chain from hook, SC in last two.

Sew onto bottom of monster (but they could also become arms!)

Horns (make 2):
Magic ring, chain 1 and make 3 SC in ring, pull tight but don’t join (this gives you a small half circle). Sew onto head of monster.

Don’t forget to stitch on a mouth!!
