Crochet Monster Appliques

Materials:

Yarn: Worsted Weight 4

Light Blue

Dark Blue

White

Black

Orange

Pink

Hook: H 5mm or G 4mm if you want it smaller

Needle

Hot glue if gluing

Scissors

Stitches:

Sc - single crochet

Dc - double crochet

Ch - chain

Sl st - slip stitch

Hdc - half double crochet

MR - magic ring

#st - do # of st in same space

Skill Level / Language- Beginner/Intermediate

Pattern Instructions

*beginning chains do not count as st

*leave long tails if sewing together, otherwise weave in ends if assembling with hot glue.

Head: Light blue

Begin: MR, ch 1.

Round 1: Hdc 10 into ring, sl st to join, ch 1. (10st)

Round 2: 2Hdc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 1. (20st)

Round 3: *Hdc 1, 2hdc* repeat around, sl st to join, ch 3. (30st)

Round 4: *Dc 2, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join, ch 3. (40st)

Round 5: *Dc 3, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join, ch 3. (50st)

Round 6: *Dc 4, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join, ch 3. (60st)

Round 7: *Dc 5, 2dc* repeat around, sl st to join, fasten off. (70st)

Eyes: White, Black, Dark Blue

Begin: Dark Blue - MR, ch 1.

Round 1: Dc 10 into MR, sl st to join, ch 1. (10st)

Round 2: 2hdc in each st around, sl st to join, change color to white, ch 3. (20st)

Round 3: *Dc, 2dc*, repeat around, sl st to join, change color to black, ch 1. (30st)

Round 4: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, fasten off. (30st)

Eye Highlight: White

Begin: Ch 3.

Round 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in last st, fasten off, tie two tails in a knot to give a more pointy defined end. (2st)

Horns: Orange - make 2

Begin: Ch 9

Round 1: Sl st in 2nd st from hook, sl st, sc, 2sc, hdc 2, 2dc, dc, ch 1. (10st)

Round 2: Turn, sc 9, sl st in last st, fasten off. (10st)

Smile: Black

Begin: Ch 21.

Round 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc 18, sl st in last st, fasten off, tie two tails into a knot to give smile a more pointy defined look. (20st)

Teeth: White - make 2

Begin: Ch 5.

Round 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, fasten off. (4st)

Tongue: Pink

Begin: Ch 4.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc 2, ch 1. (3st)

Row 2: Turn, sc 3, ch 1. (3st)

Row 3: Turn, sc 3. (3st)

Row 4: Sl st, hdc, sl st, fasten off. (3st)

Feet: Dark Blue - Make 2

Begin: Ch 4.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 2, ch 1. (3st)

Row 2 - 4: Turn, hdc 3, ch 1. (3st)

Row 5: Add 2 more chs,( dc, ch 3, sl st) in same st, ch 3, (dc next st, ch 3, sl st) in same st, ch 3, (dc next st, ch 3, sl st) in same st, fasten off.

Assembly:

Note: I assembled this applique with hot glue but you can also sew it together.

Center eye near top of monster head and attach

Space horns out to the sides to get your desired look and attach to the back of the head

Place smile below eye on row 5 of head and attach

Place teeth at edges of smile and attach

Center the tongue or put to the side slightly to get a different look and attach

Attach the eye highlight to the top right side of blue portion of eye

Attach feet to the back of head at bottom

“Pinky Monster”

Materials:

Yarn: Worsted Weight 4

Light Blue

White

Black

Pink

Hook: H 5mm or G 4mm if you would like it to be smaller

Needle

Hot glue if gluing

Ch - chain

Row 11: Sk 1, sc, hdc 7, sc, sk1, sl st in last st, fasten off. (10st)

Eye: White, Black, Dark Blue

Begin: Light Blue - MR, ch 1.

Round 1: Sc 6 in MR, change color to white, ch 1. (6st)

Round 2: 2hdc in each st around, sl st to join, change color to black, ch 1. (12st)

Round 3: Sc in each st around, sl st to join. (12st)

Eye Highlight: White

Begin: With needle and white yarn sew 1 small stitch in upper right side of blue part of eye. See pic

Smile: White

Begin: Ch 9.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in last st, fasten off, tie two tails in a knot to get a pointy look at the end. (8st)

Foot: Light Blue

Begin: Ch 6.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 4, ch 1. (5st)

Row 2 - 4: Turn, hdc 5, ch 1. (5st)

Row 5: Add 2 more chs (ch3 will count as st), 2dc in same st, ch 1, sk1, 3dc, ch 1, sk1, 3dc in last st, fasten off. (11st)

Arms: Light Blue - make 2

Begin: Ch 7

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 5, fasten off. (6st)

Assembly:

Place eye near top left corner of monster head and attach

Place smile in bottom right corner tilted and attach

Place left arm pointing down at about row 3 of head; attach to back of head

Place right arm pointing up at about row 7 of head; attach to back of head

Place foot at bottom backside of head and attach

Round 2: Place st marker in 1st st. Hdc 14, 3hdc, Hdc 14, 3hdc, sl st to 1st st of round to join, ch 1. (34st)

Round 3: Move st marker to first st of this round. Hdc 15, 3 hdc, hdc 16, 3 hdc, hdc, sl st to 1st st of round to join, ch 2. (38st)

Round 4: Move st marker to first st of this round. Dc in each st around, sl st to 1st stitch to join, fasten off. (38st)

Eyes White, Black, Light Blue - make 2

Begin: Light Blue - MR, ch 1.

Round 1: Hdc 10 in MR, change color to white, ch 1. (10st)

Round 2: 2hdc in each st around, sl st to join, change color to black, ch 1. (20st)

Round 3: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, ch 7, hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 5, sl st to connect to eye, fasten off.

Eye Highlight: White

Begin: With needle and white yarn sew 1 small stitch in upper right side of blue part of eye. See pic

Arms: Light Blue - make 2

Begin: Ch 26 you can make shorter or longer by changing the chain length

Row 1: 2 Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, 2hdc in next 24 fasten off. (50st)

Smile: White and black

Begin: Ch 9.

Row 1: Sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st in last st, fasten off.

Row 2: Change color to black, join, sc around the entire mouth/smile, sl st to join, fasten off.

Tentacle Feet: Orange

Begin: Ch 9.

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc 7, *ch 9, hdc 8*, repeat *to* 3 more times. Should have 5 tentacle parts to the foot.

Option: If you would like your tentacles to be more sturdy and add to their structure you can do the following. After the last tentacle you can ch 1, turn and add a row of sc or hdc across the top of all the tentacles.

Assembly:

Note: I assembled this applique with hot glue but you can also sew it together.

Place eyes centered approx. 1 ½ apart to back of head

Place smile in bottom center and attach

Place arms centered on sides to back of head

Place tentacle feet to bottom center back of head
