  • 4" width for applique
  • 5" width for granny square

  • dc: double crochet
  • sk: skip
  • sl: slip
  • sp: space
  • st/sts: stitch/stitches

Cat Granny Square Instructions

Begin with a slip stitch on the hook and chain 4 (counts as double and beginning ring).

Round 1

11 dc into the first ch. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3. [12 sts]

Round 2

ch 3, dc into same st, 2 dc in each st around. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3. [24 sts]

Round 3

ch 3, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st; repeat from to end of round. Join with a sl st in top of ch 3. [36 sts]

Round 4 (Ears)

sk 2, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next st, sk 2, sl st in next 3 sts, sk 2, (4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc) in next st, sk 2, sl st into next st and fasten off.

To Make the Granny Square Continue

Round 5

(All of this round is worked in the 3rd loop) Join with a new color in the 3rd loop on stitch where the final slip stitch was made to finish round 4; sc in the same st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next, dc in next 2 sts, ch 1, 2dc in next, dc in next, hdc in next, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next, dc in next, 2dc in next, ch 1, dc in next 2 sts, hdc in next, sc in next 4 sts, sl st in next 4 sts (the side of the cat's ear), ch 1, sl st in next 4 sts, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in next 4 sts, join with a sl st in top of beginning sc. [44 sts, 4 ch-1 corners]

Round 6

ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in the top of each st and (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in each ch-1 sp to the end. [60 sts, 4 ch-2 corners]

Round 6 may be repeated as many times as needed to make the size of your square.

Cut yarn and weave in all ends.

Optional

Embroider a nose, whiskers or face using scrap yarn.
