Materials

  • Aran/ size 4/ medium weight yarn

    • less than 1 oz/48 yds
    • 2 colors
    • I like to use cotton for coasters
    • I used Sugar and Cream
  • US G (4.25 mm) crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge

  • 19 dcs x 9 rows = 4.5″ (although it’s not entirely critical)

Terms/ Stitches used

  • Ch: Chain
  • St: Stitch
  • Slip st: Slip stitch
  • Sc: Single crochet
  • Sc2tog: Single crochet two sts together
  • Hdc: Half double crochet
  • Dc: Double crochet
  • Tr: Treble crochet

Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in 2 sections – the cup is worked first (including the handle) and then the whipped topping is added on top. All sections are worked back and forth, with a turn at the beginning/ end of the row, with the exception for of the border around the cup before you make the handle.
  • The ch-1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
  • Color A is the cup and color B is the whipped topping in the photos here.
  • Around in the handle section means work into the space below the ch-10.

Finished measurements:

  • Height: 3.5″
  • Width: 5″

Mug of Cocoa Coaster Crochet Pattern Instructions

Row 1: A: Ch 13, turn, sc into the second ch from the hook and across – 12 scs
(RS) Row 2: Ch 1, turn, sc 3 times into the first st, sc once into the next 10 sts, sc 3 times into the last st – 16 scs
Rows 3 – 11: Ch 1, turn, sc into each st across – 16 scs
Row 12: Ch 1, rotate and sc into the edge sc all the way around to the other edge, slip st into the first st – 34 scs
Do not fasten off, continue to the handle.

Handle
A: Turn, (you will be working down the side of the cup) slip st into the first 2 sts, ch 10, skip the next 6 scs, slip st into the next st, ch 1, turn, sc 7 times around the ch, hdc 4 times around the ch, sc 2 more times around the ch.
Fasten off. Use the tail following the final sc on the handle to secure the top of the handle to the mug.
Otherwise, weave in ends as you normally would.

Whipped topping
Row 1: B: With the RS facing you (which is the side where all the scs from row 12 of the cup are facing up), pull up a loop in the top right st, ch 1, sc into the next 16 sts – 16 scs
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc2tog the first two sts, sc across the next 12 sts, sc2tog the last two sts – 14 scs
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, sc 4 times into the first st, skip 3 sts, [2 dc, 2 tr, dc, hdc] into the next st, skip 4 sts, [hdc, dc, 2 tr, 2 dc] into the next st, skip 3 sts, sc 4 times into the last st – 8 scs, 6 dcs, 4 trs, 2 hdcs

Fasten off, weave in all ends.
