Common abbreviations of crochet stitches:

ch – chain

sc blo – single crochet back loop only

hdc – half double crochet

sc – single crochet

sl st – slip stitch

sl st blo – slip stitch back loop only

Pf st – puff stitch: wrap the yarn over the hook and insert the hook into the next stitch, yarn over again and draw up a loop (3 loops on your hook), yarn over, insert your hook through the same stitch, yarn over, and then draw up another loop (5 loops on your hook), yarn over, insert your hook through the same stitch, yarn over, and then draw up another loop (7 loops on your hook), yarn over and draw it through all 7 loops.

Puff stitch crochet beanie pattern:

Ch 46 or any other even number. Measure the chain. If you want a slouchy hat as mine, your chain must measure about 26 cm. If not, then the chain must measure 23 cm. Add more chains if 46 are not enough.

Row 1: Ch1, starting in the second loop from hook, 39 hdc. Sl st in next 6 ch. Turn.

Row 2: Ch1, sl st blo in next 6 sts, *skip the next st, sc in next st, return to the stitch that you’ve just skipped and make a pf st, repeat from * till the end. Sc in the very last stitch. Turn.

Row 3: ch1, 39 hdc, sl st blo in next 6 st. Turn

Row 4: Ch1, sl st blo in next 6 sts, *skip the next st, sc in next st, return to the stitch that you’ve just skipped and make a pf st, repeat from * till the end. Sc in the very last stitch. Turn.

Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until hat measures desired width. For head circumference 53-56 cm, I crocheted 50 cm (48 rows).

Sew 2 sides together making back seam of the hat. Insert the hook underneath the chain of the first row of the fabric that is closest to you and through the front loop on the other side, yarn over and pull it through both loops and stitch on the hook. Slip stitch those two edges together till the very bottom. Cut the yarn leaving 20 cm tail.

To close the crown use yarn needle. Insert the needle back and forth around the top, then pull the yarn tight to close hole. Fasten off and weave in ends.
