Notes:

  • This pattern is written in US terms
  • Gauge is hard to measure for this pattern as the finished piece is typically the size of a
    traditional gauge swatch
  • Finished coaster measures approximately 4×4 inches
  • Turning CH for rows 1-10 does not count as a stitch
  • Special stitch tutorial is included within the pattern
  • You might find a quick blocking of your coasters to be beneficial
  • Extra photos can be found on the last page for optional printing

Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn in two colours. Approximately 16 yards in colour A and 6
    yards for colour B.
  • 4mm hook, or other size that is complimentary to your yarn.
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape

Stitches:

CH – Chain
SS – Slip Stitch
SC – Single Crochet

DC – Double Crochet

Special Stitch Tutorial:

Lemon Peel Stitch – The lemon peel stitch starts with an odd number of chains. It
is made by alternating SC and DC stitches, always starting with a SC and ending on
a DC.

Pattern:

With yarn colour A, CH 15

Row 1:
Into the second CH from your hook, place 1 SC followed by 1 DC in the next stitch. Repeat this stitch sequence of 1 SC then 1 DC across the row, ending with a DC stitch. CH 1 and turn.

(7 SC stitches, 7 DC stitches = 14 stitches)

Rows 2-10:
Into the first stitch, place 1 SC followed by 1 DC in the next stitch. Repeat this stitch sequence of 1 SC then 1 DC across the row, ending with a DC stitch. CH 1 and turn for all rows except row 10. After completing row 10, fasten off.

(7 SC stitches, 7 DC stitches = 14 stitches)

Edging:
(I find fastening off and re-joining the yarn in the middle of an edge provides a neater finish for the border)

Round 1:

With yarn colour A, join into the middle of any edge with a SS and CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Evenly place 1 SC around all edges and make 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into each corner space. SS into the beginning CH 1, fasten off

Round 2:
Join yarn colour B into the middle of any edge with a SS and CH 1 (represents 1 SC). Evenly place 1 SC around all edges and make 1 SC, CH 2, 1 SC into each CH 2 corner space. SS into the beginning CH 1, fasten off and weave in all ends. [Photo B]
