How to Crochet a Comfortable Cotton Hat for Kids

You’ll Need:
100 (150) m of 100% cotton yarn (100m/100g);
Crochet hook size 5.
Head Circumference
48-50 (54-56) cm.
Instructions
This hat is made as one-piece work, crocheted helically.
Bottom
At first, make a ring of chain stitches.
- 1st row: 6 single crochets in the amigurumi ring = 6 sts;
- 2nd row: 1 increase in every single crochet of the previous row = 12 sts;
- 3rd row: *1 single crochet, 1 increase*; repeat from * to * x 6 times = 18 sts;
- 4th row: *2 single crochets, 1 increase*; repeat from * to * x 6 times = 24 sts;
- 5th row: *3 single crochets, 1 increase*; repeat from * to * x 6 times = 30 sts.
Ears
Now, turn to making ears. Choose 2 points from the sides and make 3 single crochets in these points, except the previously made increases (e.g., 8th stitch from the beginning of the row and 8th stitch from the end of the row).
- 6th row: 4 single crochets, 1 increase, 1 single crochet, 3 single crochets in the 1st single crochet of the previous row, 2 single crochets, 1 increase, *4 single crochets, 1 increase*; repeat from * to * twice, 1 single crochet, 3 single crochets in the 1st single crochet of the previous row, 2 single crochets, 1 increase = 40 sts.
Make 4 more rows according to the previously described scheme, making increases (6 single crochets in every row + 3 single crochets from both sides for ears).
After that, make 2 rows without increases in the places of ears.
Make 5 rows with reverse increases (see the scheme) and continue to increase stitches around the bottom part (6 single crochets in every row) or in ½ row, depending on the head circumference.
Crown
Continue working to the needed depth. It’ll be about 7-11 rows, depending on your child’s age.
Flaps
Make 1 row, catching only front loops, and make increases in the 2nd row (in every 4 stitches). Make the 3rd and 4th rows with single crochets.
Fasten your hat with 1 row of single crochets.
