Materials

  • Stylecraft Special DK, 322 yds per 100g, approx. 100 to 175 yds required
  • Size H-8 [5mm] crochet hook, or size needed to meet gauge
  • Yarn needle

  • Beginning Shell (b-sh): Ch 3, 4 treble crochet in stitch indicated.
  • Shell (sh): 5 treble crochet in stitch indicated.

Notes

The hat is worked top-down. An optional flower is made separately and attached like an applique.

Beginning ch-2 counts as the first double crochet of each round. Use a ch-3 if you prefer. If you prefer a magic ring, just ensure that you have the same number of double crochets as the stitch count at the end.

I wanted to try this pattern with alternating colors in the hat body but I didn’t have any colors that coordinated well. Give that a try for a different look.

Crochet Pattern Instructions

Hat Set Up

Toddler (size 16″ hat)

Round 1: Ch 3, sk 2 ch (counts as first dc), 7 dc in third ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc, pull on beginning strand to tighten: 8 dc.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 20 dc.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, 2 dc in next 18 dc, 3 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 42 dc. Continue to Hat Body below.

Child (size 18″ hat)

Round 1: Ch 3, sk 2 ch (counts as first dc), 7 dc in third ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc, pull on beginning strand to tighten: 8 dc.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 20 dc.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] 8 times, [2 dc in next dc] twice, dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 48 dc. Continue to Hat Body below.

Young Adult/Small Woman (size 20″ hat)

Round 1: Ch 3, sk 2 ch (counts as first dc), 7 dc in third ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc, pull on beginning strand to tighten: 8 dc.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 20 dc.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] 9 times, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 50 dc.

Woman (size 22″ hat)

Round 1: Ch 3, sk 2 ch (counts as first dc), 7 dc in third ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc, pull on beginning strand to tighten: 8 dc.

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] to last dc, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 20 dc.

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same st as joining, [2 dc in next dc, 3 dc in next dc] 9 times, 2 dc in last dc, sl st to first dc: 50 dc.

Hat Body

Round 1: Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, *sk 2 dc, sh (see Special Stitches above) in next dc, sk 2 dc, sc in next dc, rep from * to last 5 dc, sk 2 dc, sh in next dc, sk 2 dc, sl st to first sc.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *ch 4, sc in third tr of next sh, ch 4, sc in next sc, rep from * to last sh, ch 4, sc in third tr of last sh, ch 4, sl st to first sc.

Round 3: B-sh (see Special Stitches above), *ch 2, sc in next sc, ch 2, sh in next sc, rep from * to last sc, ch 2, sc in last sc, ch 2, sl st to top of ch 3 of b-sh.

Round 4: Sl st to center of b-sh, ch 1, sc in same st, *ch 4, sc in next sc, ch 4, sc in third tr of next sh, rep from * to last sc, ch 4, sc in last sc, ch 4, sl st to first sc.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *ch 2, sh in next sc, ch 2, sc in next sc, rep from * to last sc, ch 2, sh in last sc, ch 2, sl st to first sc.

Rep rounds 2-5 as follows.

  • Toddler: 11 rows of Hat Body repeat or until hat measures approximately 6″ or until desired length.
  • Child: 13 rows of Hat Body repeat or until hat measures approximately 7″ or until desired length.
  • Young Adult: 15 rows of Hat Body repeat or until hat measures approximately 8″ or until desired length.
  • Woman: 17 rows of Hat Body repeat or until hat measures approximately 9″ or until desired length.

Optional Flower

Round 1: Ch 5, sl st to first ch to form a ring, ch 1, [sc in ring, ch 3] 6 times, sl st to first sc.

Round 2: Sl st into first ch-3 sp, *in ch-3 sp work: ch 3, 3 tr, ch 3, sl st in same ch-3 sp, sl st in next ch-3 sp, rep from * around, fasten off.

Finishing

With yarn needle, attach the flower to the hat. Weave in ends securely.
