Create Beautiful Crochet Cord Baskets: A Step-by-Step Guide to Organize Your Space

Crochet cord baskets are not only practical for organizing your space but also a fun and creative project to work on. The beauty of these baskets lies in their versatility, allowing you to choose different colors and patterns to match your style and decor. With just a crochet hook and some sturdy cord, you can easily create a unique and charming basket that is perfect for storing anything from blankets to toys.

Whether you're a seasoned crocheter or a beginner looking for a new project, making a crochet cord basket is a delightful way to add a touch of handmade charm to your home. So grab your yarn and get crocheting!

Materials Needed to Make a Basket

  • Cotton cord (5 mm) in two colors (approximately 200 meters)
  • Crochet hook (size should match your comfort; I use 8 mm, but some prefer 6 mm or 10 mm)

The size of the basket depends on your needs. Mine is 30 cm high, and the bottom diameter is 25 cm.

Basic Crochet Terms

  • ch - chain
  • sc - single crochet
  • dc - double crochet
  • inc - increase (2 dc in 1 chain)

Creating the Basket Bottom

There is a simple way to make a bottom. Crochet around with double crochets, starting every round with 2 chains and closing each round with a slip stitch.

  1. 12 dc in magic ring (12)
  2. (inc) repeat 12 times (24)
  3. (1 dc, inc) repeat 12 times (36)
  4. (2 dc, inc) repeat 12 times (48)
  5. (3 dc, inc) repeat 12 times (60)
  6. (4 dc, inc) repeat 12 times (72)

Here I’ve stopped making my bottom, but if you want your basket bigger or smaller, you should just modify this pattern.
Tip: If your bottom isn’t flat, that means your hook size doesn’t fit with the cord. You can change the hook or modify the pattern by adding more double crochets in each round, or less if your work is waving.

Wall Stitch Technique

Change the yarn color and start crocheting around the bottom of your basket. In the first round, make single crochets in all chains (72).

From the second round, use this stitch:
1 sc, 1 chain (skip 1 chain of the previous round), 1 sc, 1 chain (another skip), etc...

In the next round, make a sc in the chain from the previous round, then 1 chain (skip), 1 sc, 1 chain, etc...

Adding Holders to the Basket

If you want to make holders for your basket, create a break in the wall stitch. Crochet 9 chains and return to the wall stitch. You should make holders symmetrically on both sides of the basket. In the final round, make single crochets in all chains of the holders.

Final Thoughts

That's all! Enjoy your beautifully crafted crochet cord basket that not only enhances your decor but also provides a practical solution for organizing your space.
