Instructions
Starting the Hat
If you need help with the popcorn stitch, start by:
- Starting with a magic circle, ch2, and make 8 popcorn in the circle.
- Join with slst to the first popcorn.
Hat Construction
- Row 1: Working in continuous rounds, make 2 popcorn in each space around.
- Row 2: Make 2 popcorn, then popcorn in the next space, and repeat around.
- Row 3: Make 2 popcorn, then popcorn in the next 2 spaces, and repeat around.
- Row 4: Make 2 popcorn, then popcorn in the next 3 spaces, and repeat around.
- Rows 5-10: Continue with popcorn around.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Creating the Ear Flaps
To create ear flaps:
- Attach yarn to the 6th stitch from the join.
- Work six stitches from both sides of the join for ear flaps (the ear flaps will decrease themselves).
- Make popcorn in the next 7 spaces.
- Turn and make popcorn in the next 6 spaces (draw the loop for the popcorn from behind).
- Continue turning and making popcorn in decreasing numbers until you reach 2.
- Fasten off and repeat for the other side.
Trimming the Hat
For the trim:
- Join color B.
- Hdc evenly around, placing 2 HDC in the tip of each ear flap.
- Sc evenly around, putting 2 sc in each double hdc space.
- Fasten off.
Adding Straps
To create the straps:
- Cut six strips for each side (a total of twelve) about 24 inches in length.
- Braid and sew on as desired; looping them works well.
Using Pom Pom Maker
I use a pom pom maker for the pom, but a CD or any hollowed out circle will work.
