Materials

  • Worsted Weight Cotton Yarn:
  • White – 1 oz, 50 yds (30 g, 45 m)
  • Blue – ½ oz, 25 yds (15 g, 22 m)
  • Light Blue – ½ oz, 25 yds (15 g, 22 m)
  • Crochet Hook: Size H-8 (5.00 mm)

Joining with Single Crochet (sc)

When instructed to join with sc, begin with a slip knot on the hook, insert the hook in the stitch or space indicated, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on the hook.

Special Stitches

Shell: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same stitch or space indicated.

Strips (Make 3)

Row 1: (Right Side) Starting at the bottom, with white, ch 9, shell in the 6th ch from the hook; skip the next 2 ch, ch 3, and slip stitch in the last ch.

Row 2: Working in the starting chain on the other side, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), shell in the same ch opposite the shell, skip the next 2 ch, dc in the next ch.

Rows 3-11: Ch 3, turn, shell in the shell, dc in last dc. (8 dc)

At the end of Row 11, finish off white and weave in ends.

Strip Border (Make 2 Blue, 1 Light Blue)

Rnd 1: With the right side of the strip facing, join color with slip stitch to the first dc on any end shell, ch 3, dc in the next 2 dc, 3 dc in the ch-2 sp, dc in the next 3 dc, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the last dc, * working along the side of rows in spaces; dc in the next row, 2 dc in the next 9 rows, dc in the next row *, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the first dc, dc in the next 3 dc, 3 dc in shell, (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in the last dc; repeat from * to * once; join with a slip stitch to the first dc. Finish off, leaving an 18” long end for sewing strips together.

Finishing

With right sides facing and shells facing the same direction, matching stitches and working through back loops only, sew sides of strips together. (The 9 dc across top and bottom shells are left unsewn.)
