I tested this pattern using Red Heart Super Saver Yarn and an I hook.

The square measured
7-1/2" x 7-1/2".

Materials

  • Hook: Size H for afghan / Size E for tablecloth
  • Yarn: 4 ply worsted weight yarn for afghan / #10 Bedspread Cotton for tablecloth

Stitches Used

ch, sl st, sc, dc.

Difficulty Level

EASY

Important Note

This pattern is worked in rounds without turning the work.

Instructions

RND 1: Ch 6, join with sl st in 1st ch to form a loop. (Ch 12, sc in ring) 12 times. [12 ch12-loops]
FASTEN OFF.

RND 2: Join with the same yarn in one of the ch 12 loops. 3 sc in each ch 12 loop around. Join with sl st in 1st sc made. [36 sc]

RND 3: Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same space. Dc in each of next 8 sc. * (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next sc. Dc in each of next 8 sc. Repeat from * twice. Join with sl st in the top of the beginning ch 3. [48 dc and 4 ch-2 spaces]

RND 4: Sl st in next dc and in the next ch 2 space. Ch 3, (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in the same ch 2 space.
Repeat the following pattern six times: [* Sk next dc, dc in next dc. Back up & dc in the dc just skipped. (cross stitch made). Repeat from * 5 more times using only the unworked stitches (6 cross stitches in all on one side).
CORNER: (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next ch 2 space. ]
Repeat from [ to ] twice.
Repeat the following pattern six times for this segment again: [* Sk next dc, dc in next dc. Back up & dc in the dc just skipped. (cross stitch made). Repeat from * 5 more times using only the unworked stitches (6 cross stitches in all on one side).
Join with sl st in the top of the beginning ch.

RND 5: Repeat RND 4 except you should work 8 cross stitches on each side instead of 6. Join with sl st in the top of the 1st dc.

FASTEN OFF

WEAVE IN ENDS.
