1 pattern for the main part of shawl - two-sided pearl pattern.

Description of the Pattern

1st row: 1 knit st, 1 purl, 1 knit st.

2nd row: 1 purl, 1 knit st, 1 purl.

3rd row: 1 purl, 1 knit st, 1 purl.

4th row: 1 knit st, 1 purl, 1 knit st.

5th row: repeat from 1st row.

Alternative Patterns

Pattern 2 - 1 x 1 rib.

Pattern 3 - garter stitch - all knit sts from both sides.

Knit all selvedge sts with knit sts. Central st from right side with purl, from wrong side - with knit st.

All yo - cross knit st or purl st (due to the pattern).

Instructions

Cast on 5 sts.

Row-by-Row Instructions

1st row: 2 knit sts, 1 central purl, 2 knit sts.

2nd row: knit st, straight yo (direction to you), purl, straight yo, central knit st, reverse yo (direction from you), purl, reverse yo, knit st.

Final Steps

When you get the needed size (about 3.5 skeins), change to 1x1 rib pattern, with increases remaining the same. Make 5 rows with rib.

Then, transition to garter stitch pattern for about 8-10 rows.

Bind off all the sts very loosely.

The shawl is darling, the instructions for the more intricate stitches would be better understood if there were pictures or drawings. I found them a little vague, trial and error, ripping out the stitches repeating the pattern over and over finally got it right. This would probably save the frustration with pics that's all.
