The quantity of stitches is a multiple of 4 + 3.

Set-Up Row

Starting in the 2nd chain from the hook, make 1 single crochet in each chain across the row. Turn.

Row Instructions

1st Row

Chain 1, make 1 single crochet in the first single crochet, *chain 4, make 1 single crochet in each of the next 4 single crochets; repeat from * across to within the last 2 stitches, chain 4, make 1 single crochet in the last single crochet.

Turn.

2nd Row

Chain 1, holding the chain-4 loop to the back (right side), work 1 single crochet in the first single crochet, and 1 single crochet in each single crochet across the row. Turn.

3rd Row

Chain 1, make 1 single crochet in each of the first 3 single crochets, *chain 4, make 1 single crochet in each of the next 4 single crochets; repeat from * to within the last 3 single crochets, chain 4, make 1 single crochet in each of the last 3 single crochets. Turn.

4th Row

Chain 1, holding the chain-4 loop to the back (right side), work 1 single crochet in the first single crochet, and 1 single crochet in each single crochet across the row. Turn.

Repeat rows 1 through 4.

I'd love to see what the stitches look like, but the color of the yarn makes it impossible. Perhaps you could upload a different sample?
