​Crochet Basket with Leather Handles

You’ll need:

3 balls of Red Heart Cordial in Cheerful Susan Bates (9949);

Crochet hook 5 mm;

Yarn needle;

Scissors;

Leather scrap: 2” x 6” (5 x 15 cm), four ¾” studs or rivets.

Size: 11” (28 cm) in diameter x 5½” (14 cm) tall.


Stitches control: 14 sts x 6 rows = 4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm).


Instructions

Bottom

Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout), 14 dc in 3rd ch from hook, join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 15 dc.

Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 30 dc.

Round 3: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 45 dc.

Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 2 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 2 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 60 dc.

Round 5: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 3 sts, *2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of next 3 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 75 dc.

Round 6: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 4 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 4 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 90 dc.

Round 7: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 5 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 5 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 105 dc.

Round 8: Ch 3, dc in same st, dc in each of next 6 sts, *2 dc in next st, dc in each of next 6 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 120 dc.

Rounds 9-11: Ch 1, working in back loop only, sc in each st around; join with a slip st in first sc – 120 sc.

Round 12: Ch 3, working in back loop only, dc in each of the next 2 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, *dc in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 60 dc; 20 ch-3 spaces.

Round 13: Ch 3, dc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 ch sts, *dc in each of next 3 sts, dc in each of the next 3 ch sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 120 dc.

Round 14: Ch 3, dc in each of next 2 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts, *dc in each of the next 3 sts, ch 3, skip next 3 sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 60 dc; 20 ch-3 spaces.

Rounds 15–16: Repeat rounds 13–14.

Round 17: Ch 1, *working in back loop only, sc in each of the next 3 sts, sc in each of next 3 ch sts; repeat from * around; join with a slip st in first sc – 120 sc.

Round 18: Ch 1, working in back loop only, sc in each st around; join with a slip st in first sc – 120 sc.

Round 19: Ch 1, working in back loop only, sc in each st around; join with a slip st in first sc – 120 sc.

Fasten off.

Assembly

Weave in ends.

Leather Handles

Cut leather scrap in 2 pieces, 1” (2.5 cm) wide x 6” (15 cm) long. Round the ends if desired. Poke a hole through each end of the leather pieces, about a ½” (1.3 cm) from each end. Put one stud or rivet through each hole and use them to attach the handles to opposite sides of basket.
