Materials Needed
Before we start, you’ll need:
- An 8mm crochet hook
- Stitch markers
- A darning needle
- Scissors
- Yarn: I’m using the Bernat Maker Yarn (a bulky weight cotton-nylon blend).
Step 1: Creating the Base Chain
Start with a slip knot.
Chain 36.
To chain, yarn over and pull through the loop. Repeat this process until you have a total of 36 chains.
Step 2: Yarn Over Slip Stitches
Turn your chain around to work in the second chain from the hook.
For Yarn Over Slip Stitch: Yarn over, insert your hook into the second chain, yarn over and pull through, then complete the stitch by pulling through all loops on the hook.
Continue this process for a total of 35 yarn over slip stitches.
Step 3: Turn and Continue Rows
At the end of each row, chain 1 and turn your work.
Begin the next row by identifying the front and back loops of your stitches.
Work yarn over slip stitches for every stitch across the row (total of 35 stitches).
Rows 2 to 90
Repeat the previous steps (chain 1, turn, work yarn over slip stitches) for each of the 90 rows.
Each time, complete 35 stitches per row.
Step 4: Transition to Regular Slip Stitches
For row 91, start with 8 yarn over slip stitches.
Follow with 19 regular slip stitches.
Finish with 8 yarn over slip stitches.
Chain 1 and turn.
Step 5: Repeat and Finish
Continue alternating between yarn over slip stitches and regular slip stitches for a total of 8 additional rows (rows 92 to 98).
Once completed, leave a long tail at the end before fastening off.
Step 6: Working on the Other End
Replicate the same 8 rows of stitches on the other end of the initial chain.
Begin by reattaching your yarn and repeating the same stitch patterns (8 yarn over slip stitches, 19 regular slip stitches, finishing with 8 yarn over slip stitches).
Step 7: Sewing the Bag
Thread your needle with the long tail of yarn.
Line up the edges of your bag, using stitch markers to hold them in place.
Use the whip stitch or mattress stitch to sew the sides together.
Secure the stitches and weave in the ends to ensure a neat finish.
Step 8: Adding the Straps
For the straps, create a crochet cord by chaining 2 and working single crochets into the back loops.
Make two straps, each 25 inches in length.
Sew each end of the straps to the top edges of your market bag, ensuring they are securely attached.
