So next time you head out for some retail therapy, don't forget to grab your trusty crochet market tote bag and strut your stuff in style!
Materials:
J (6.0 mm) crochet hook
458 yards of medium/#4 weight yarn (I used 2 cakes of Frutta from Hobbii in the “#1/Sunrise” colorway)
Yarn/tapestry needle
Scissors
Measuring Tape
Sizing:
Bag (without handle) is 14.5 inches tall
25 inch circumference
Strap (before seaming) is 26 inches long
Pattern Notes:
You can adjust the sizing of this bag in lots of different ways to suit your needs.
You can make the strap longer/shorter before seaming. The bag shown can be either a shoulder bag or cross body style, but you can adjust it however you like too!
If you need a larger circumference bag, just increase the number of chains at the beginning. Just be sure it is any even multiple.
Bag can be made taller/shorter by working more rounds of the center mesh part.
For the best look make the more solid sections at the top and bottom of the bag the same. You can change up the heights of these sections as well, just be sure they match each other.
Easy Crochet Market Tote Pattern:
Bottom Section:
Ch 90 (to change the circumference, work in any even multiple)
Join with a slip stitch in the furthest chain from the hook.
Round 1: Ch 2, then work a hdc into the first chain and in each chain around. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as a hdc) then work a hdc into each stitch around. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Repeat round 2 until it has a height of about 4 inches (I worked 11 rounds to achieve this, but you may need to work less/more to get the same measurement).
Middle (Mesh Section):
Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), then *skip the next stitch, then work (dc, ch 1) into the next stitch. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Round 4: Ch 4 (counts as a dc, ch 1), then *work (dc, ch 1) into each dc from the previous round. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Repeat round 4 until the bag is 11 inches tall. I did 12 rounds of the mesh stitch.
Top Section:
Round 5: Ch 2, then work a hdc into each stitch and space around. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Round 6: Ch 2, then work a hdc into each stitch around. Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Repeat round 6 until this top section of the bag is the same as the bottom section of the round (mine was about 4 inches and 11 rounds). Join to close the round with a slip stitch.
Bag Strap:
Note: the strap is worked back and forth in rows.
Row 1: Ch 2 and turn. Work a hdc in each of the next 10 stitches.
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Work a hdc into each stitch across.
Repeat row 2 until your bag strap is as long as you like. I worked the bag strap shown for about 26 inches.
Finishing & Assembly:
Turn bag inside out then seam strap to opposite side of the top edge of the bag with a whip stitch..
With bag still inside out, seam the bottom of the bag with a whip stitch.
Weave in any ends.
Turn bag right side out and it’s ready to go!
