CROCHET BAG PATTERN

Bottom of the Market Bag

With main bag body yarn color, ch 54.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain until the end. Ch 1, turn. Join round with sl st.

Rows 2-7: Sc in each stitch across row. Ch1, turn. Join round with sl st.

You will now change from rows to rounds.

Round 1: At the end of Row 7 of the bottom of the bag, instead of turning the fabric to start the next row, you will now crochet around the entire perimeter of the rectangular fabric you just completed. That means you’ll ch1 (place stitch marker here to mark the beginning of each round), and then sc in each stitch around, making sure to do 2sc in each of the four corners of the rectangle. Join round.

Round 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each stitch in the round, join round.

Body of the Market Bag

Round 1: Ch 4, *skip a stitch, dc, ch1*, repeat from * to * around round ending with a dc and ch1 into the 3rd chain from the bottom of the turning chain into the top of the 3rd chain from previous round.

Round 2: Ch 4, [dc, ch1] into the top of each dc from the previous row, continue around row, join. Join round with sl st.

Round 3-24: repeat round 2

Round 25: Ch 1: ch 1, sc into each stitch in round. Join round with sl st.

Top of the Market Bag

Round 1 – 5: Change yarn to color B. Ch 1, sc into each stitch in round. Join round with sl st.

Round 6: Lay the bag down and pat flat so that it’s even and the seam is at the edge of the bag. Place a stitch marker at 1.5 inches in from the edges of the bag, on each side of the bag, both front and back (4 stitch markers in total).

Ch 1, sc into each stitch until you get to the first stitch marker. Complete a sc in the stitch with the stitch marker and then chain 72. Join the chain across to the opposite side of the bag where the next stitch marker is with a sc stitch.

Sc in the next stitches until you reach the next stitch marker. Complete a sc in the stitch with the stitch marker and then chain 72. Join the chain across to the opposite side of the bag where the next stitch marker is with a sc stitch. Finish the last set of sc’s until you reach the end of the round, join.

Round 7: Ch 1, sc into each stitch in the round, including into the chains on each side of the bag (these will become the handles of the bag). Join round with sl st.

Round 8 – 9: Ch 1, sc into each stitch in round. Join round with sl st.

Fasten off, and weave in the ends. Block bag if needed.
