  • Small amounts of Stylecraft Special DK in colours 1 & 2
  • OR an equivalent yarn, i.e. Small amounts of Worsted Weight #3 in colors 1 & 2
  • A suggested yarn for this would be Red Heart Baby Hugs Yarn

4.00mm Clover crochet hook, small bow for decoration

Tension

5htr & 4 rows measures approx 1 inch

Basket Instructions

Row 1

With colour 1, make 6ch, ss to first ch to make a ring, (RS) 3ch, work 13tr into ring, ss to top of 3ch. Turn. (13tr + 3ch)

Row 2

(Inc) 3ch, 1tr into base of 3ch, work 2tr into each tr to end, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (27tr + 3ch)

Row 3

(Inc) 3ch, 1tr in base of 3ch, * 1tr into next tr, 2tr into next tr, * rpt from * to * to last tr, 1tr into tr, ss to top of 3ch on beginning of row. Turn. (41tr + 3ch)

Row 4

1ch, 1dc into base of 1ch, 1dc into each tr to end, ss to first dc on beginning of row. Fasten off. Turn. (42dc)

Row 5

Working into back loop of stitch for this row, join in colour 2, make 1ch, 1htr into base of 1ch, 1htr into each dc to end, ss to first htr on beginning of row. Turn. (42htr)

Working through both loops of stitch from now on.

Rpt Row 5 once. Fasten off. Turn.

Row Sequence for Color Change

Rpt Row 5 in colour sequence as follows:

  • Twice in colour 1
  • Twice in colour 2
  • Twice in colour 1
  • Once in colour 2

13 rows will have been worked in all from the beginning.

DNT at the end of the 13th row.

Final Rows

Continue with colour 2 and work 1 row of crab stitch (see abbrev). Fasten off.

Handle Instructions

Using colour 1, make 41ch, 2htr into second ch from hook, 1htr into each of the next 38ch, 4htr into next ch, working along the opposite side of cast on ch, work 1htr into next 38ch, 2htr into last ch, ss to first htr on beginning of row to end. Fasten off. (84htr)

Finishing Touches

Weave in all loose ends of yarn and trim off.

I have used spray starch to stiffen the basket and handle. Place the basket over the bottom of an appropriately sized container (cover to protect the container, e.g., tin can, end of bottle), then spray with starch. Leave to dry and remove. Repeat the same for the handle. Once dry, sew each end of the handle to the inside of the basket.

Decorate with small bows and fill with small chocolate sugar-coated mini eggs.
