Create a Beautiful Crown and Hat for Your Granddaughter with Crochet Patterns

Dear Debby,

The following posts are mostly for you, as you asked to find a pattern of crown for your granddaughter. I hope that I could help you.

Materials:

– Worsted weight yarn in Turquoise blue and white. I used Loops & Threads Impeccable (sold at Michaels) in White and Aqua. I used almost a whole skein of white for the 6-9 month size so if you are making a bigger hat you will want to buy at least two skeins.

– Size H Crochet Hook

– Snowflake buttons

– Mini Snowflake Ornaments

Abbreviations:

  • Magic Ring Tutorial
  • Ch = Chain
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • SC Decrease = Single Crochet Decrease
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • TC = Triple Crochet

Tiara Pattern (Small – 6 Inches Long):

Chain 26, HDC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (25 HDC)

Row 2: SC in first two, HDC in next 6, DC in next 9, HDC in next 6, SC in last two, chain 1, turn

Row 3: SC in first 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC, TC, TC + chain 2 + TC, TC, DC, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC, SC in last 3.

Fasten off leaving long end to sew onto hat.

Tiara Pattern (Large - 11 Inches Long):

Chain 38, HDC in second chain from hook and rest of the way down chain, chain 1, turn (37 HDC)

Row 2: SC in first 8, HDC in next 6, DC in next 9, HDC in next 6, SC in last 8, chain 1, turn

Row 3: SC in first 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC, TC, TC + chain 2 + TC, TC, DC, HDC, SC in next 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC, SC in last 3.

Fasten off leaving long tail to sew onto hat.

When finished you could also sew the ends together to make a stand-alone crown.

To make an even larger Tiara/Crown, add 12 chains to starting chain and make an additional crown hump to either side of the crown. A single crown hump pattern is as follows: SC in first 3, HDC, DC + chain 2 + DC, HDC. One crown hump is equal to 6 stitches… one hump on each side equals an additional 12 stitches.

Sew on snowflakes if desired.

Now that you have your basic hat completed, sew the Tiara onto the front. You can sew all the edges down or just the sides and bottom (as I did).

To attach the hair you will want to start cutting strands of yarn that are about 2.5 yards long or 48 inches when folded in half. Secure strands by looping them around the bottom single crochet edges where you want your braid to sit.

Then add more strands above the bottom edge strands to make the braid thicker and the hair fuller. You could really add as many as you want. I think this hat would look great with more hair but you have to decide how heavy you want it. I didn’t want it to be too heavy for my daughter. I also didn’t want it sliding off her head.

Next, you will want to twist the edge of the hair like the picture below. Tie the top of the ponytail with a strand of yarn and add a large snowflake if you want.

Braid yarn leaving it loose at the top and then making the braid as tight as you can at the bottom. Tie the bottom of the ponytail with another strand of yarn and add a smaller snowflake. You could add as many snowflakes as you want to the braid and hat.
