Complete Knitting Guide for Stylish Jumper with Buttonholes and Collar

Measurements

To fit chest 41(44:51:56:67)cm; Knitted measurements around chest 41(44:51:56:67.5)cm; approximate length from centre back neck excluding collar 23.5(24.5:30.5:34.5:44)cm.

Materials

  • 3(4:5:6:9) 50g balls of Rowan All Seasons Cotton in Cream/Organic 178
  • Pair each size 4½mm and 5mm knitting needles.
  • 5(7:9:9:12) 20mm diameter buttons.

Tension

24 sts and 25 rows to 10cm over rib pattern using 5mm needles.

Abbreviations

  • beg - beginning;
  • cm - centimetres;
  • cont - continue;
  • dec - decrease;
  • foll - following;
  • inc - increase;
  • k - knit;
  • m1 - make one stitch by picking up and working into back of loop lying between stitch just worked and next stitch;
  • p - purl;
  • patt - pattern;
  • rem - remaining;
  • rep - repeat;
  • RS - right side;
  • st(s) - stitch(es);
  • tbl - through back loop;
  • tog - together;
  • WS - wrong side;
  • y2rn - yarn round needle twice to make 2 stitches.

To Make the Jumper

With 4½mm needles, cast on 98(106:122:134:162) stitches. For the first rib row (RS), p2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end. For the second rib row, k2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end. Change to 5mm needles and work in pattern as follows:

Buttonhole Rows

1st (buttonhole) row (RS): *P2, k2; repeat from * to last 6 stitches, p1, p2tog, y2rn, p2tog, p1.

2nd row: K2, [p1, k1] into y2rn of previous row, k2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end.

3rd row: P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end.

4th row: K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end.

5th to 10th rows: Repeat 3rd and 4th rows 3 times more. Repeat the last 10 rows until the sweater measures approximately 13.5(13.5:17.5:21.5:29.5)cm from cast on edge, ending with a 2nd row.

Divide for Leg Holes

Left Side

Keeping pattern correct throughout, work as follows: Next row (RS) Pattern 25(25:29:33:41), k2tog, k1, turn and continue on these 27(27:31:35:43) stitches only, leave remaining stitches on a spare needle. Next row P1, p2tog, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end. 26(26:30:34:42) stitches.

Next row: Cast off 2 stitches, pattern to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. 23(23:27:31:39) stitches. Next row: P1, p2tog, pattern to last 2 stitches, p2tog. 21(21:25:29:37) stitches. Next row: Cast off 3 stitches, pattern to end. 18(18:22:26:34) stitches.

Work 4(6:8:8:10) rows in pattern and decrease 1 stitch at beginning of 2nd and 4th of these rows. 16(16:20:24:32) stitches.

Next row: P2, m1, pattern to end. 17(17:21:25:33) stitches. Next row: Pattern to last 3 stitches, k1, m1, k2. 18(18:22:26:34) stitches. Next row: P2, m1, pattern to end. 19(19:23:27:35) stitches. Slip stitches onto a holder, do NOT break yarn.

Chest Section

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to stitches on spare needle, cast off 2, k2tog tbl, p1, [k2, p2] 2(4:6:7:8) times, k2, p1, k2tog, k1, turn and continue on these 16(24:32:36:40) stitches only, leaving remaining stitches on spare needle. Next row (WS): P1, p2tog, pattern to last 3 stitches, p2tog tbl, p1. 14(22:30:34:38) stitches.

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, pattern to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. 12(20:28:32:36) stitches. Repeat the first of the last 2 rows once more. 10(18:26:30:34) stitches.

Work 5(7:9:9:11) rows in pattern. Next row: P2, m1, pattern to last 2 stitches, m1, p2. 12(20:28:32:36) stitches. Next row: K2, m1, pattern to last 2 stitches, m1, k2. 14(22:30:34:38) stitches. Repeat the first of the last 2 rows once again. 16(24:32:36:40) stitches. Break yarn and leave stitches on a holder.

Right Side

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to remaining stitches on spare needle, cast off 2 stitches, k2tog tbl, p1, [k2, p2] 6(6:7:8:10) times, k1, turn and continue on these 28(28:32:36:44) stitches only, leave remaining stitches on a spare needle. Next row (WS): Cast off 3 stitches, pattern to last 3 stitches, p2tog tbl, p1. 24(24:28:32:40) stitches.

Next row: K1, k2tog tbl, pattern to last 2 stitches, k2tog. 22(22:26:30:38) stitches. Repeat the first of the last 2 rows once again. 18(18:22:26:34) stitches. Work 5(7:9:9:11) rows in pattern, decreasing 1 stitch at beginning of 2nd and 4th of these rows. 16(16:20:24:32) stitches.

Next row: Pattern to last 2 stitches, m1, p2. 17(17:21:25:33) stitches. Next row: K2, m1, pattern to end. 18(18:22:26:34) stitches. Repeat the first of the last 2 rows once more. 19(19:23:27:35) stitches. Break yarn and leave stitches on a holder.

Buttonband Overlap

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to remaining stitches on spare needle and keeping pattern correct throughout, cast off 12(12:12:12:20) stitches, pattern to end. 7 stitches remaining. Decrease 1 stitch at end of next row. 6 stitches. Cast off 3 stitches at beginning of next row. 3 stitches. Decrease 1 stitch at end of next row. Cast off remaining 2 stitches.

Join Sections

With RS facing, and keeping pattern correct throughout, [pattern 17(17:21:25:33), m1, k2] from first holder, cast on 2 stitches, [k2, m1, pattern 12(20:28:32), m1, k2] from second holder, cast on 2 stitches, [k2, m1, pattern 17(17:21:25:33) stitches] from 3rd holder. 62(70:86:98:118) stitches. Work 1(3:5:5:7) rows in pattern, ending with a WS row.

Shape Front

Place a marker at centre of row between centre 2 stitches. Next row (RS): Pattern to 2 stitches before marker, k2tog tbl, k2tog, pattern to end. 60(68:84:96:116) stitches.

Next row: Pattern to 2 stitches before marker, p2tog, p2tog tbl, pattern to end. 58(66:82:94:114) stitches. Repeat the last 2 rows 2 times more. 50(58:74:86:106) stitches.

Next row: Pattern to 4 stitches before marker, [k2tog, k2tog tbl] twice, pattern to end. 46(54:70:82:102) stitches. Next row: Pattern to 4 stitches before marker, [p2tog tbl, p2tog] twice, pattern to end. 42(50:66:78:98) stitches. Repeat the last 2 rows 2 times more. 34(42:58:70:90) stitches.

Left Front

Next row:

Pattern to marker, turn and continue on these 17(21:29:35:45) stitches only, leaving remaining stitches on a spare needle. Cast off 3(4:9:9:10) stitches at beginning of next row. Cast off remaining 14(17:20:26:35) stitches.

Right Front

With RS facing, rejoin yarn to remaining stitches and continue as follows: Cast off 3(4:9:9:10) stitches at beginning of next row. Cast off remaining 14(17:20:26:35) stitches.

Collar

Join front seam. With RS facing and 5mm needles, pick up and knit 30(32:36:40:48) stitches down left side of neck, 30(32:36:40:48) stitches up right side of neck, 12(12:12:12:20) stitches across back neck and 6 stitches down overlap. 78(82:90:98:122) stitches.

1st rib row (WS): K2, *p2, k2; repeat from * to end. 2nd rib row: P2, *k2, p2; repeat from * to end. These 2 rows form the rib pattern. Rib 1 row.

Buttonhole row: P2, k2tog tbl, y2rn, k2tog, pattern to end. Next row: Pattern to last 4 stitches, [p1, k1] into y2rn, k2. Continue in rib, working a buttonhole row on every 10th row until collar measures approximately 10(17:21:26:30)cm, ending with the row following a buttonhole row. Cast off in pattern.

To Make Up

Do not press. Sew on buttons to correspond with buttonholes, making sure buttons are correctly positioned on collar for turn-back.
