Comprehensive Guide to Knitting a Vest and Mittens

You’ll Need:

600 (650) 700g of dark-orange EMe yarn (42% wool, 58% acryl; 40m/50g);

Knitting needles 9;

Double-pointed knitting needles 9;

5 buttons.

Used Patterns

Garter Stitch:

knit sts, in circle rows: 1 row of knit sts, 1 row of purls by turn;

Stockinette Stitch:

in RS row – knit sts, in WS row – purls, in circle row – knit sts;

Wrong-Side Pattern:

in RS row – purls, in WS row – knit sts, in circle row – purls;

Big Pearled Pattern:

1 knit st, 1 purl by turn. Replace the pattern to 1 st after every 2^nd row;

Cable Pattern (16 sts wide):

due to the scheme, on which only RS rows/odd circle rows are stated. Make WS rows/even circle rows according to the pattern. Make 1^st-16^th rows x once, repeat 3^rd-16^th row.

Stitches Control:

big pearled pattern: 9 sts x 14 rows = 10 x 10 cm;

16 sts of cable = 13 cm.

Vest

Back

Cast on 53 (57) 61 sts and make 3 cm of garter stitch for the placket. Then, make 4 (5) 6 sts of big pearled pattern between selvage sts, start with 1^st of wrong-side pattern (1 st of stockinette stitch), 1 st of wrong-side pattern, 16 sts of cable, 11 (13) 15 sts of big pearled pattern, start with 1 st of stockinette stitch, 16 sts of cable, 4 (5) 6 sts of big pearled pattern, start with 1 st of stockinette st. In 35 cm from the placket, make the first and last 3 sts with garter stitch for arm-holes plackets. In 53 (54) 55 cm from the placket, bind off 1 x 8 (9) 9 sts and 1 x 9 (9) 10 sts in the 2^nd row for shoulder chamfers. At the same time with shoulder chamfers, bind off the central 19 (21) 23 sts for the neck-hole and bind off all the sts.

Right Front

Cast on 23 (31) 33 sts and make 3 cm with garter stitch for the placket. Then, make 3 sts of garter stitch (placket) between selvage sts, 4 (5) 6 sts of big pearled pattern, start with 1 st of wrong-side pattern (1 st of stockinette stitch), 1 st of wrong-side pattern, 16 sts of cable and 4 (5) 6 sts of big pearled pattern, start with 1 st of stockinette stitch. In 9 (18) 11 cm from the placket and in every 8 cm, make 5 button-holes on the central st of the placket. In 35 cm from the placket, make the last 3 sts before the selvage st with garter stitch. In 43 (44) 45 cm from the placket, leave the first 5 sts from the right side for the neck-hole and bind off 1 x 3 (4) 5 sts, 1 x 2 sts and 2 x 1 st in every 2^nd row. Make shoulder chamfer from the left side in the same way as for back. Work with garter stitch on the previously left 5 sts of placket between selvage sts. For smooth rounding, work with short rows in the following way: knit 2 sts, turn, knit back, turn, knit 3 sts, turn, knit back, turn, knit on all the sts. In 9.5 (10.5) 11.5 cm (along the inner edge), leave all the sts.

Left Front

Make in symmetry to the right front, but without button-holes.

Assembly

Make shoulder seams. Sew the short edges of the plackets, sew the placket to the back neck-hole. Make side seams, leaving upper 18 (19) 20 cm open for arm-holes. Sew the buttons.

Mittens

Cast on 20 sts with double-pointed knitting needles and make 4 circle rows with garter stitch. Then, make 2 sts of big pearled pattern, starting with 1 st of stockinette stitch, 16 sts of cable and 2 sts of big pearled pattern, starting with 1 st of stockinette stitch, increase 4 x 1 st at the beginning of every 6^th row according to the pattern. In 4 cm from the set-up row, divide the sts for the thumb hole before cable and work with straight and reversed rows. In 4 cm, work with circle rows. In 22 cm from the set-up row, bind off the sts.

Make the second mitten in symmetry to the first.
