The pattern is 2 sts and 3 rows.

Chain of chain sts + 3 chain sts increase

1st row (set-up row): double crochets, starting from 4th chain st and all the other sts.

2nd row: 1 chain st, single crochet in each st.

3rd row: 3 chain sts, * 1 right side relief treble crochet through double crochet of the 1st row, 1 double crochet*.

4th row: 1 chain st, single crochet in each st.

5th row (make in checkerboard order): 3 chain sts, * 1 double crochet in right side relief treble crochet, 1 right side relief treble crochet through double crochet of the 3rd row*.

Repeat from 2nd to 5th rows.

I've never seem a pattern written like this before.
Chain of chains — does this mean chain as long as you want the blanket to be?
What is relief? The photos look like I can probably tell by those better than the way the pattern is written. Can you explain better for me? Thank you.
