Knitting Braids: Techniques for Purl and Knit Stitches

Braid Techniques

Braid (2 Knit Stitches, 2 Purls) Lean Right - Slip 2 stitches onto the auxiliary needle and leave behind work, knit 2 stitches, then knit the 2 slipped stitches as purls.

Braid (2 Knit Stitches, 2 Purls) Lean Left - Slip 2 stitches onto the auxiliary needle and leave in front of work, purl 2 stitches, then knit the 2 slipped stitches as knit stitches.

Braid (4 Knit Stitches) Lean Right - Slip 2 stitches onto the auxiliary needle and leave behind work, knit 2 stitches, then knit the slipped stitches as knit stitches.

Braid (4 Knit Stitches) Lean Left - Slip 2 stitches onto the auxiliary needle and leave in front of work, purl 2 stitches, then knit the slipped stitches as knit stitches.

Instructions

The total quantity of stitches should be multiplied: 16 stitches + 2 selvedge stitches.

Row Instructions

2nd row: Purl all stitches;

4th row: * 4 purls, 2 knit stitches, 4 purls, 2 knit stitches, 4 purls *;

6th row: * 2 purls, 4 knit stitches, 4 purls, 4 knit stitches, 2 purls *;

8th row: * 2 purls, 2 knit stitches, 8 purls, 2 knit stitches, 2 purls *;

10th row: All purl stitches;

12th row: All purl stitches;

14th row: * 2 purls, 2 knit stitches, 8 purls, 2 knit stitches, 2 purls *;

16th row: * 2 purls, 4 knit stitches, 4 purls, 2 knit stitches *;

18th row: * 4 purls, 2 knit stitches, 4 purls, 2 knit stitches, 4 purls *;

19th row: * 2 purls, braid (2 knit stitches, 2 purls) lean left, 4 knit stitches, braid (2 knit stitches, 2 purls) lean right, 2 purls *;

Repeat from 1st to 20th rows.
